Mike Smith is in his eighth year at PC and currently
serves as the Associate Director of Athletics. He is involved with and
coordinates all aspects of operations within the department.
Smith has worn many hats while at PC. He is a former PC
student, is married to a former student, served on the faculty, coached several
of the teams and is a PC dad. He returned to Clinton, S.C., in 2002 to become the Professor of Military Science
and began coaching at PC as a volunteer assistant coach for Coach Gregg Nibert and
our men’s basketball team. That first year, the team earned a 27-9 record and
advanced to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen. After two years, Mike switched sides and
began as an assistant coach for our women’s basketball team. The team attained
a 21-7 record in their second year.
Smith retired from the Army in 2005 and added the
additional duties as Assistant Athletic Director along with continuing to be an
assistant women’s basketball coach. In 2007, he left basketball and was named
Associate Director in order to help in the transition to Division I. However for 2007-2008, he stepped in to serve
as an interim head coach for women’s lacrosse. The team had a miraculous year
attaining a .500 record, the best in school history, while playing a player
short for most of the year.
The 1982 PC graduate earned a B.S. in economics and business
administration and was a four-year letterwinner and senior captain for the Blue
Hose basketball team. Smith also earned an MBA from Webster University.
The Clover, S.C., native is a retired Lieutenant Colonel
in the U.S. Army having served our country for over 23 years. He is married to
the former Lynn Hope of Rock Hill, S.C., who is also a PC alumnus from the class of ’82. She
was a shooting guard for the Blue Hose during her tenure and still has a best
jump shot in the family. Mike and Lynn have one son, Steven, a senior at
PC.
