Lexington, S.C. – Over the weekend, junior
Max Benson took first place in the 2020 ITA Tour: Fall Circuit at the Topspin Swim and Racquet Club in Lexington, S.C.
Benson, who competed as unattached, was awarded the number one seed and a first round bye.
On Saturday, Benson advanced through the Round of 16 by defeating his opponent 6-3, 6-0.
The Albany, N.Y. native got the ball rolling on Sunday with a 6-3, 6-1 victory in the quarterfinals, followed by a 6-3, 7-6 win in the semifinals.
After dropping the first set of the finals 3-6, Benson bounced back with a 6-3 win to even the match. In a sudden death third set, Benson was victorious 1-0.
When asked what it meant to win the tournament this past weekend, Benson said, " It meant a lot to me to because I really enjoyed being able to get back out on the court and compete, even though we couldn't go out and do it as a team."
Despite losing the fall portion of the schedule, Benson and the team are continuing their hard work in preparation for the spring season. Benson was quoted as saying, "The team as a whole is working harder than ever to improve and prepare for the start of the spring season. We are working on and off the court to improve in all aspects of our game."
