RALEIGH, N.C. - The Blue Hose were little
match for NC State on Wednesday night as the Wolfpack took a 5-1 win over PC at
Dail Soccer Stadium. Jonny Mercado
earned PC's bright spot, an unassisted goal, in the 70th minute of
play.
The Blue Hose
fall to 1-4-1 on the season while NC State improves to 3-3 overall.
NC State came
out on the front foot scoring the first goal in the third minute of play when
Chris Zuerner scored on a combo play from Michael Smith inside the box. Akil DeFreitas doubled the advantage just
five minutes before the break with a breakaway goal.
At the break,
PC was 11-2 behind on shots but earned the only corner kick of the first
half.
Out of the
break, Mercado tallied his first goal of the season in the 70th minute
when he found a rebound and smashed a shot into the goal net. The goal is the sophomore's first career
goal.
NC State
responded in the 78th minute when Mamadou Kansaye scored on a combo
inside the box. Just 25- seconds later
Smith scored a goal off a rebounded shot to make the score 4-1 to the hosts.
NC State went
5-1 up in the 86th minute when DeFreitas scored for the second time
on the night off a breakaway.
The Blue Hose
equaled the Wolfpack in shots in period two with five attempts. Nico Fazio and Mercado both took two shots in
the match.
James Neal
earned the start in goal and went the first 45-minutes allowing two goals. He was replaced at the intermission by Andrew
Wallingford who allowed the three second half goals.
PC opens
league play in one-week's time against Winthrop at home. The match from Martin Stadium starts at 7
p.m.
