The Presbyterian College men's soccer team (3-12-0, 3-4-0 Big South) wraps up the 2011 season with a home match against No. 13 Coastal Carolina on Wednesday night and a road contest at UNC Asheville on Saturday afternoon. PC looks to rebound from a 2-1 loss to Winthrop on October 26.
Coastal Carolina enters Wednesday with a No. 13 NSCAA ranking and a 14-2-0 overall record as well as a 7-0-0 Big South marker. The Chanticleers have won their last 10 matches, dating back to a 1-0 loss to Appalachian State. Ashton Bennett leads the team with 18 goals and five assists for 41 points.
UNC Asheville ends its regular season on Saturday against the Blue Hose. The Bulldogs have gone 3-11-3 on the year and 2-5-1 in conference action. UNC Asheville has lost its last five matches and Jake Hagedorn leads the squad with six goals and one assist.
PC looks to improve its record against both Coastal Carolina and UNC Asheville. The Blue Hose have gone 1-6-1 against the Chanticleers and 1-4-2 against the Bulldogs. PC fell to Coastal last year but earned a 1-1 tie against the Chanticleers in 2009. The Blue Hose also lost to UNC Asheville last year by a 2-1 margin but tied the Bulldogs in 2009, 2-2.
Mercado and Byron Quinatoa share the team lead in goals and points, each with four goals and one assit for nine points. Monchetti ranks sixth in the Big South Conference and leads the team in assists, with five, while goalkeeper Ethan Watson stands tied for sixth in the conference in saves, with 54.
PC fell to Radford in its last match, a 2-1 affair in Rock Hill, S.C., on October 26. Jonny Mercado scored his third goal in two games thanks to an Ignacio Monchetti assist in the 80th minute to cut a 2-0 Winthrop lead in half, but the Blue Hose could not find an equalizer in the closing minutes.
