CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College men's soccer team
took on Wofford on Monday night in the team's second exhibition match of 2011, but
the Blue Hose fell short in the contest by a narrow 1-0 margin at Martin
Stadium.
The match, broken into three 30-minute periods, saw action
on both sides of the field as PC totaled nine shots to Wofford's 12.
Ignacio Monchetti (Montevideo, Uruguay) led PC with three
shots and put one on goal. Luke Ade (Alpharetta, Ga.) recorded a shot on goal
as well.
Goalkeeper Tanner Osborne (Lexington, S.C.) made five saves
on the night in a full-match performance
The Blue Hose looked to have a chance in the 19th
minute when Monchetti blocked and recovered a kick upfield from goalkeeper from
Andrew Drennan, but the freshman's cross to midfield bounced to a Wofford
defender.
Osborne stopped three Terrier shots in the first 30 minutes,
including a screamer from Carlos Dominguez Gonzalez 16 minutes in.
The break reenergized the Blue Hose as the side came out
firing. Ade launched a rocket that Wofford keeper Andrew Drennan managed to
corral in the 33rd minute and the Blue Hose found another chance a
minute later.
The game's lone goal came in the 40th minute as
Gonzalez managed to poke in a loose ball while lying in the goal box to put
Wofford ahead, 1-0.
Freshman Hollie Gray (West Des Moines, Ill.) provided a
number of strong plays on Monday, tracking down through passes and narrowly
missing left on a shot in the 50th minute.
PC's defense held steady in the final 30 minutes as the Blue
Hose kept the deficit to one goal. Thomas Palma (Greenville, S.C.) took away a
chance late in the match deep in the PC end and Oliver Nobels (Columbia, S.C.)
and Tommy Erwood (Leawood, Kan.) also helped the back line.
Jonny Mercado (Lilburn, Ga.) attempted one last shot in the final minute but the chance skipped wide.
PC wraps up its exhibition schedule on Tuesday night against
Oglethorpe. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m. at Martin Stadium.
