Manning's Two Goals Lift Men's Soccer Over Oglethorpe in Exhibition

CLINTON, S.C. - The Presbyterian College men's soccer team ended its exhibition schedule on a high note Tuesday night, using a pair of Jamel Manning (Harrisburg, Pa.) goals to top the visiting Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels at Edens Field at Martin Stadium.

The teams packed all three goals into the match's first 15 minutes. Jared Mitchell (Huntsville, Ala.) picked up an assist on one of Manning's two goals on the evening. Matthew Palma (Greenville, S.C.), Luke Ade (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Tommy Erwood (Leawood, Kan.) each recorded a shot on goal in the win.

Goalkeeper Tanner Osborne (Lexington, S.C.) made four saves and played the first and final 30-minute periods in the three-period match. All four stops came in the first stanza.

The Blue Hose wasted little time finding the scoreboard, scoring 57 seconds after the opening whistle. Mitchell pressured the Oglethorpe defense into turning the ball over to Manning, whose run upfield ended with a successful shot into the left side of the net.

Oglethorpe evened the match in the 13th minute, however, as Nick Williamson converted a cross from Aaron Walker into the goal box for the tying score.

PC answered quickly, retaking its lead less than a minute later on another Mitchell-to-Manning connection. Mitchell recovered the ball from an Oglethorpe defender and sent in a cross to Manning, who finished the bang-bang play to put the Blue Hose ahead, 2-1.

The second period saw PC hold its advantage as the defense allowed zero shots on goalkeeper Ethan Watson (Taylorsville, Ga.) to enter the final frame with a 2-1 lead.

PC put two more shots on the Oglethorpe net but its lead proved enough to seal the win. One shot came off of a slick chest trap from Mike Day (Columbia, S.C.), who angled the ball to the foot of Ade to force a difficult Oglethorpe save.

Jordan Archer (Charlotte, N.C.) made several strong defensive plays in the middle of the field to keep the attack alive. Most of the final period's action stayed deep in the Stormy Petrel as the Blue Hose created four corner kick chances.

PC kicks off the 2011 regular season on Saturday against East Tennessee State in Johnson City, Tenn. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
