Homers Sink Blue Hose in Conference Opener

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – A pair of three-run homers, one in each game, proved to be the difference as Presbyterian College dropped both ends of its first Big South Conference doubleheader of the season to USC Upstate, 7-2 and 4-3 on Saturday afternoon.

NOTABLES
- Kiley Kross had a team-high three hits for the afternoon, including her team-leading third home run of the season.
- Katelyn Petty drove in both of PC's runs in the opener and Rebecca Clark plated two runs in the second game for the first multi-RBI games of their collegiate careers.
- Kross, Petty and Kaitlyn Tucker each notched at least one hit in both contests.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED GAME 1
- Neither team threatened until Upstate had runners at second third with two outs in the third, but Jenna Greene induced an inning-ending fly out to keep the game scoreless.
- With two outs in the top of the fourth, Petty came through with a two-run single which scored Courtney White and Jillian Hewes to give the Blue Hose a 2-0 lead.
- The Spartans put the first two on in the home half of the frame, but Greene set down the next three in order to squash the threat.
- USC Upstate took the lead in the fifth on a three-run homer.
- The Spartans tacked on four more in the sixth.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED GAME 2
- USC Upstate struck first in game two, belting its second three-run shot of the day in the bottom of the first.
- The Blue Hose got two back in the next half inning, as Clark brought in a pair with a double.
- The Spartans took advantage of a PC miscue in the home half to go up 4-2.
- Kross led off the fourth with a solo home run to get Presbyterian back within a run at 4-3. PC got the next two on following Kross' long ball, but Upstate got out of the jam to keep the one-run cushion intact.
- Neither team got a runner beyond first base for the remainder of the contest.
