Blue Hose Win Pitcher’s Duel to Open Greenville Showdown

GREENVILLE, S.C.-  The Presbyterian College softball team extended their early season success on Friday afternoon with a 1-0 win over the Iona Gaels in the opening game of the Greenville Showdown. The Blue Hose move to 6-3 with the win while Iona is 0-1 after playing their first game of the year.

Game Breakdown

There was not a lot to see early in the game besides batters walking back to the dugout as both pitchers were locked in. Jenna Greene and Kara Zazzaro both had the strikeout pitch working as Greene punched out the first six, allowing a single in between, and Zazzaro sat down four of the opening six. Jaiden Tweed was the first base runner aboard for PC, drawing a walk to open the top of the third. She stole second but was stranded there to end the top half. Presbyterian got two more baserunners in the top of the fourth with Jillian Hewes and Morgan Hess working walks, but they were also left on the bases. Iona had a similar situation in the bottom half with runners on 1st and 2nd, but Greene struck out the final batter to get out of the jam.

A silent 5th inning went across before PC came around to score. Jersey Silver walked and stole second to get into scoring position. Kaitlyn Tucker got an infield single that moved Silver to third to have the Blue Hose threatening. After Tucker stole second, a passed ball allowed Silver to come home and Tucker to move up to third to get a run on the board. Morgan Hess walked to keep the inning alive, but Rebecca Clark struck out as the Gaels prevented further damage. Greene would do her thing in the last two innings, striking out three of the last six batters to secure the win for Presbyterian.

Notables
  • This marks PC's first six-game win streak since 2011, when they opened the season 7-0.
  • Jenna Greene's 14 strikeouts are second-most by a Blue Hose pitcher in the DI era in a single game. Greene now holds the top six spots in that category.
  • This is Presbyterian's first time winning a game with no RBI since Mar. 8, 2020, when they defeated UNC-Wilmington 1-0, scoring on a throwing error.
