Freeman’s Walk-Off Lifts PC Past Radford for Conference Opening Victory

CLINTON, S.C.-  The Presbyterian College softball team fought through a bitter cold, windy, and muddy day at PC Softball Complex on Saturday afternoon, but came away with a win as Lath Freeman hit a walk-off homerun to down Radford, 5-4. The series is scheduled to conclude on Sunday as the two teams will go back at it for a doubleheader starting at 1pm.

Game Breakdown

Jenna Greene sat down Radford 1-2-3 to begin the game and allowed her teammates to come to bat. Layna Johnson struck out, but reached first on a wild pitch. She was then out at second as Kaitlyn Tucker got aboard on a fielder's choice. After Freeman grounded out, that's when PC did their damage. Jillian Hewes singled and then moved to second on a throwing error, all the while Tucker advanced to third and then home. The ever dangerous Morgan Hess was next and she wasted little time, blasting the first pitch she saw out to center field for a two-run shot. Presbyterian got the bases loaded as Rebecca Clark, Jaiden Tweed, and Kelby Goodrum got on, but they were left out there as PC took an early 3-0 lead.

Greene took care of the Highlanders in the top of the 2nd as the Blue Hose looked to add more. Johnson and Freeman both reached, but were left stranded to end the frame. After another 1-2-3 by Greene in the 3rd, Radford struck in the 4th. A two-run homer to right field with two outs brought the Highlanders right back in it, 3-2. Radford was able to tie the game in the 6th as a sacrifice fly scored the tying run. However, Presbyterian got the run right back in the bottom half as Goodrum used the windy gusts to her advantage and sent a ball over the left field wall for a leadoff homerun. The Highlanders wouldn't go away though as they tied it once again in the 7th with an RBI single. As they did just a week ago, the Blue Hose used full advantage of their "last-ups" as Freeman wasted little time and walked it off with a homerun out to left-center, giving Presbyterian the 5-4 victory.
