Men’s Wrestling Goes Three Rounds with Duke, American, & Utah Valley

DURHAM, N.C. – The Presbyterian College men's wrestling team has a hectic Saturday ahead of them in North Carolina, preparing for a set of three duals back-to-back-to-back at a neutral site in Pittsboro. PC will tussle with Utah Valley, American, and the hosting Duke Blue Devils in that order.

Head coach Mark Cody's crew will begin the quad-event by facing Utah Valley at 10:00 AM tomorrow, transitioning to wrestle American at approximately noon. The triple threat concludes versus Duke at roughly 2:00 PM.

Seaforth High School will be the sight of Saturday's melee, denoting the third, fourth, and fifth duals for the Scotsmen in the month of November.

SCOUTING UTAH VALLEY

- A first-time matchup between two schools located nearly 30 hours away from each other by car, the Blue Hose will square off with a Wolverine opponent who has wrestled only top-25 programs at this stage of the season.

- Utah Valley opened up the fall schedule with a surprise victory in Palo Alto against #23 Cal State Bakersfield (25-15), winning six of the first eight matches to jump ahead and hold on from there.

- It's only gotten tougher for head coach Adam Hall's group, with their last three duals against the likes of Stanford (#12), Nebraska (#3), and Oklahoma State (also #3 the following week).

- An affiliate of the Big 12 in men's wrestling, Utah Valley looks to improve upon a two-win season last spring, as their only conference win last year fell against North Dakota State by 10 points.

SCOUTING AMERICAN

- The old stomping grounds of coach Cody, American University is in a similar position to the Wolverines, in that they've never come across PC before and are aiming to build upon their lone win thus far.

- The first two duals involving the Eagles were close calls, dropping an eight-point decision to the Michigan State Spartans in the opener, but rebounding in their next attempt versus Clarion in Washington, D.C.

- It ended up being a 19-18 final, sealed in the 197-lb. match with a 5:00 pin. However, American's momentum was short-lived in their most recent encounter, a 37-0 blowout at the hands of Maryland.

- Head coach Jason Borrelli and co. placed 13th out of 17 at the EIWA Championships back in March, capping off a season where they were victorious in eight duals.

SCOUTING DUKE

- Presbyterian finishes up the triple-header against the hosting Blue Devils, a Duke foe whom they have crossed paths with before (2021 and 2022).

- It wasn't a strong start for Duke and head coach Glen Lanham, losing their first three outings to Long Island, Rutgers, and Hofstra by an average of 27 points per match. They recovered nicely in their last try on the 16th, defeating Sacred Heart by eight.

- Trailing 15-14 with two matches left, the Blue Devils surged in front for good on a 50-second fall and a three-point decision in the heavyweight affair that felled the Pioneers.

- Duke goes one-on-one with Michigan on Friday evening before turning their attention to the Blue Hose and others, the first of six consecutive home matches that stretches all the way to Christmas.

LAST TIME OUT

- Although the scoreboard said 13-11 in Presby's favor with four matches still to go, the Blue Hose were unable to sustain that slim cushion the rest of the way and dropped a 14-point bout to Davidson last Sunday.

- The lead changed hands four times throughout the SoCon opener, as Caleb Roe (184) grabbed an 18-9 MD which led to Morvens Saint Jean offering up perhaps his best career win in the 285-lb. match (a four-minute, five-second pin that put PC in front).

- Freshman Tyler Rodier gave the garnet and blue their last lead with a 4-0 result, although the Wildcats would end the contest on a 16-0 flurry to beat Presbyterian for the sixth consecutive time.

- When the Blue Hose last faced Duke two years ago, it was another thriller in Templeton that saw two ties in the waning moments. Trenton Donahue delivered a 9-8 W in the penultimate bout, setting up a winner-take-all match in class 149. Alas, it was the visitors who prevailed on a 10-2 major decision to win the dual by four.
