Men’s Wrestling Rounds Out Home Schedule by Facing App. State & Campbell

CLINTON, S.C. – Just four Southern Conference contests are left on the radar for the Presbyterian College men's wrestling team, gearing up for two of the most polished programs in the league in consecutive order. The Blue Hose will welcome Appalachian State to Clinton on Thursday afternoon for a 1:00 PM start, segueing to their last home appearance of 2024 on Sunday in a head-to-head versus Campbell.

PC will have quite the challenge in front of them to conclude their home slate, wrestling two foes that have already stacked 17 victories between them as regular winners of the SoCon. Head coach Mark Cody's unit will be searching for their first-ever win against both the Mountaineers and Fighting Camels, looking to steer the ship in the right direction after an 0-4 divisional beginning.

Tomorrow's dual with ASU will be held at the nearby Christian Life Center next to campus, returning to Templeton Gymnasium on the 18th to meet Campbell. Presby's two opponents this week combined to go 15-1 in SoCon territory last year, including a perfect 8-0 league stretch from App State and 28 overall W's between them and the Fighting Camels.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT – APPALACHIAN STATE

- Both of PC's foes over the next four days rank inside the NWCA (National Wrestling Coaches Association) "Mid Major" top ten list, with the Mountaineers clocking in at number nine in that specific poll. They got to that point by defeating the North Carolina Tar Heels (then-#24 in the country) by 10 points pre-Christmas, winning a trio of SoCon outings since then.

- ASU decimated Duke in their first dual of the new year in a 44-0 shutout, winning league scuffles versus The Citadel (33-4), VMI (32-7), and most recently Chattanooga (28-13) in Tennessee.

- Six-time Southern Conference Coach of the Year JohnMark Bentley has collected 139 victories over his decade-plus in Boone, hoisting seven league titles including last spring where his squad went undefeated in SoCon play for an unprecedented fifth time.

- Since Presbyterian formed its program and entered the SoCon's ranks in 2020, App State has congregated a league record of 31-3. They're perfect in four tries against Cody's club, harboring a sole conference blemish to their name currently.

- All three of ASU's losses in 2024 have been against nationally-ranked schools, including a narrow 22-16 decision at Campbell back on February 2, a win that ratcheted the Fighting Camels to the ranks of the Top 25.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT – CAMPBELL

- Certainly no slouches themselves and positioned to snatch the SoCon regular season crown after the aforementioned win against the Mountaineers, Campbell sits in the number seven slot in the Mid-Major rankings while displaying a #24 tab in the latest countrywide poll.

- An 11-3 resume has gotten head coach Scotti Sentes to new heights in his fourth year in Buies Creek, bringing the Fighting Camels five consecutive conference W's by an average difference of 25 points.

- Prior to a Saturday date with Chattanooga on their home base, Campbell has acquired near-identical victories against The Citadel and Bellarmine (35-6 and 36-7). They have not tasted defeat in a dual setting since December 19, winners of eight in a row after falling to Stanford and Purdue.

- Campbell's only L as the visiting party came against Nebraska (then the number four team in the nation), just three bouts away from equaling App State's feat in 2023 of running the SoCon table.

- The Fighting Camels have already hit the 11-win clip for the third straight season, taking 16 victories with them to Nationals last March where they qualified five wrestlers to the NCAA Championship bracket.

LAST TIME OUT

- Presbyterian never could get out of the starting gates in their last appearance opposite Gardner-Webb, unable to repeat 2023's Senior Day win against the Runnin' Bulldogs and were instead handed a 54-0 loss in Templeton.

- 165-pounder Michael Ramirez and sidelined 197-pounder Malcolm Wiley were honored prior to the start of the match for their immense contributions to the Blue Hose men's wrestling program.

- Unfortunately for Cody's unit, a heap of injuries has played a major role in the team's winless start to SoCon action. Sophomore Caleb Roe (184) leads the way in overall wins (eight) across the roster, planning for an upset of epic proportions on Thursday and Sunday as they tangle with the conference's upper echelon.
