CLINTON, S.C. – Making up for a three-run loss to the same team 48 hours earlier – and doing so in a defiant way – the Presbyterian College softball squad breezed by Morehead State on Sunday in the final round of the Pinnacle Invitational, PC's 21
st home victory over the last 12 months in a 9-1 crushing.
Guiding head coach
David Williams to a run-rule victory over the same university where he spent seven seasons prior to his Blue Hose arrival, Presbyterian left no doubt in their fourth triumph of the year by landing nine hits from six different players.
None were bigger than
Molly Mattas' three-run blast in the bottom of the 3
rd, the same inning where PC gathered six runs to turn what was a scoreless affair into a blowout instantly.
All but one of the team's victories thus far have come by a margin of at least eight, finishing things quickly with another three-run burst in the 5
th to complete their payback mission against the Eagles.
A six-game slate awaits the blue and garnet this week after the one-sided W, headed to Charlotte on Wednesday for a midweek doubleheader at Queens.
NOTABLES
- Mattas obliterated a leftfield homer to put a sizable gap between her squad and the opponent, gifting Presby their fourth HR of the season from four different players.
- As a matter of fact, all four members of the roster who have gone yard in 2024 (Mattas,
Maddi Wood,
Emma Yanes, and
Logan Grice) have done so for the first time in a PC uniform.
- The Newberry transfer may have had the most flair on Sunday, although lead-off hitter
Kelby Goodrum turned in a career-best offensive day while running shortstop duties. She'd go 3-of-4 with the bat in her hands, securing two runs herself and batting in another.
- Shrugging off an injury scare the previous night to return to the order, second baseman
Kaitlyn Tucker kept up her immaculate streak of appearances that dates all the way back to 2021. In her entire collegiate career (141 games), Tucker has never been held out of the starting lineup.
- Fifth-year record-holder
Jenna Greene threw all five frames and was characteristically efficient in the circle, striking out six Eagles and giving up only three hits out of 21 batters faced. After becoming the first pitcher in PC history to reach 600 K's on Friday, she extended her school-record win count to 51 in the thrashing over MSU.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-
Gracie DeCuir,
Kendall Owens, and Grice were responsible for the first trio of runs in the avalanche that was the 3
rd, setting the stage for Mattas to crush her first Blue Hose homer that doubled that lead in a blink.
- Grice and Wood joined Mattas in jogging past each base to bring the advantage to six, the largest home run of the year for Presbyterian statistically speaking.
- Morehead squeezed out a sole run in the top of the 5
th, although their stay was swiftly ended by Goodrum and Tucker who cranked back-to-back RBI singles that scored three and immediately ended the contest with the 9-1 mercy rule.
UP NEXT
- PC will now turn their attention to Queens in their first visiting role of the year, enacting a 1:00/3:00 DH with the Royals on Wednesday. The Blue Hose crossed paths with Queens three times in 2023, winning the last two in Clinton by an added clip of 8-3.
- From there, Williams' crew will take a weekend trip to the Peach State for a four-game tournament at Georgia Southern. They'll face GSU and Purdue Fort Wayne twice each, returning home on February 28
th for a one-off against SC neighbor Wofford.
