PC Nipped by Mastodons and Eagles

STATESBORO, Ga. – The Presbyterian College softball team came up empty-handed on Sunday afternoon in another two-part round robin tournament, finishing their stay at Georgia Southern with a 10-0 loss to Purdue Fort Wayne and a 9-2 decision versus GSU in the second half of the doubleheader.

Now at 5-10 on the season, PC was unable to gain a solid sense of consistency in the Peach State although peculiarly not giving up a single home run all weekend in a grand total of 30 innings.

Head coach David Williams' roster returns to Clinton for a quartet of meetings in the near future, going head-to-head with Wofford on February 28 for a one-and-done midweeker.

NOTABLES

- Morgan Farthing, Jillian Hewes, Mallory Fletcher, and Kendall Owens all posted two hits on Sunday, making up eight of the team's 13 connections at the plate altogether. Farthing managed both of hers against Georgia Southern, the second multi-hit outing of the Pennsylvania native's sophomore year.

- All five PC pitchers made an appearance in the circle during the DH, with fifth-year leader Jenna Greene going the longest distance of five frames against the Eagles. That bullpen reached seven strikeouts overall.

- Transfer shortstop Emma Yanes brought in her fifth RBI of the month in the setback with GSU, a 4th-inning sacrifice fly ball that had the affair deadlocked momentarily.

GAME ONE – PURDUE FORT WAYNE (4-10) def. PRESBYTERIAN (5-9), 10-0 – 6 INNINGS

- Yesterday's bout between the Blue Hose and IPFW may have gone well past the standard seven-inning barrier (amounting to PC's longest game since pre-COVID that tapped out after 10 stanzas), although the rematch was mostly one-sided in a duel that concluded after six.

- The Mastodons amassed a hit differential of plus-eight in the win, going errorless as pitcher Kayla Roberts was credited with the win.

- Purdue Fort Wayne never looked back after a 3-0 opening, producing six scores in the last two chapters to end things in run-rule style.

GAME TWO – GEORGIA SOUTHERN (10-3) def. PRESBYTERIAN (5-10), 9-2

- Following a 7-2 decision between the two foes less than 24 hours ago, a near-identical tally was solidified on Sunday thanks to a game-closing 5-0 burst from the home side as they reached their 10th W of the semester.

- As mentioned above, Farthing and Yanes' swings quickly brought the deficit back to an even playing field, although a sequence of three RBI-singles and another double down the road put things out of reach.

- Anslie Pettit struck out seven on her way to an official save, while Dixiana Sims was given credit for the victory. Presbyterian walked twice and reached extra bases on a couple of wild pitches, while Greene was handed the losing result.

UP NEXT

- A special occasion will come on Wednesday at the PC Softball Complex, as the Blue Hose will welcome first-year program Wofford for a sole outing. The Terriers will make the short drive from Spartanburg with a 5-5 record next to their name.

- Head coach Chelsea Butler was chosen to lead Wofford's inaugural campaign, last seen in a 2-0 defeat against crosstown opponent (and Big South Conference rep) USC Upstate back on the 21st.

- First pitch with the Terriers is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
