JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Surpassing double digits in the hits department for the first time in 12 games to ruin Jacksonville's recent hot streak, the Presbyterian College softball team earned a 5-2 road victory on Sunday afternoon. PC held the Dolphins scoreless for the last four frames, picking up their second true road win of 2024.
The fourth time this semester that head coach
David Williams' roster has totaled 10 hits or better, the Blue Hose assumed a one-run edge in the top of the 4
th against an opponent that – only seven days ago – bested then-#12 Florida State in Tallahassee.
Presby only increased the lead from that point, witnessing four multi-hit efforts while super-senior
Jenna Greene earned her 53
rd career victory (the most of any pitcher to ever suit up for the program).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After trading minor blows through the early going, PC's persistence paid off by loading the bases thrice within the first four innings on Sunday.
- Freshman
Kasey Wolfe allowed the Blue Hose to scratch on a sacrifice fly that brought home second baseman
Kaitlyn Tucker for the senior's 11
th score of the campaign, the first of a pair of RBI by the Spartanburg rookie.
- The Dolphins wrestled the lead back in their favor on a 3
rd-frame base hit, although it'd be the last time that JU would be able to contribute any runs against a locked-in Greene in the circle.
- Finishing the affair on a 4-0 run, coach Williams' crew managed a pair in the top of the 4
th (the first on a Jacksonville error and the second on another run-batted-in by Wolfe), adding a couple insurance scores in the 7
th for their eighth win overall this spring.
- The bottom of PC's order were responsible for extending that advantage before the lid was closed on the W, as shortstop
Emma Yanes and centerfielder
Kara Starnes registered back-to-back base hits opposite relief pitcher Ashlee Harwood.
- While the strikeout numbers were a tad low on Greene's end – sending back two for the school's all-time leader in that category – the fifth-year captain was still stellar in keeping the Dolphins at bay down the back half of the contest.
- Jacksonville was denied a single hit in the last three stanzas against Greene – who reached her 60
th complete game of an exceptional career – facing 32 batters on Sunday without ever letting the mid-match lead dissipate.
UP NEXT
- Presbyterian will take their momentum-booster into another visiting designation in 48 hours, going head-to-head with Western Carolina for a Tuesday doubleheader beginning at 2:00 PM.
- One of PC's most frequent foes, having played the Catamounts 15 times since turning Division I in the late 2000's, the Blue Hose will look to continue their good fortunes against WCU after winning five of the last six in the series.
- Western Carolina has limped into a 3-11 start in '24, although approaching the DH on March 12 with a 13-4 mercy rule victory over N.C. Central from Cullowhee.
