Softball Comes up Short in Game 3 at Boiling Springs

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – A three-run sequence in the top of the 2nd was just what the Presbyterian College softball team needed after an offensive slump in recent weeks, however the opposition from Gardner-Webb recuperated thereafter for a 6-3 decision on Sunday afternoon and a three-game sweep.

On paper, both the Blue Hose and Runnin' Bulldogs shared similar stat lines (with a 9-8 edge in total hits by G-W and either side stranding eight runners over the course of the contest).

Kaitlyn Tucker and Logan Grice both went 2-of-3 at the plate, while Presby ramped up the power on the offensive end by knocking four doubles on the day.

However, PC's detriment came by Gardner-Webb piecing together a game-closing 5-0 run that spanned three innings, sending the Scotsmen to a Big South mark of 4-11.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- While the Runnin' Bulldogs were the ones to strike first for the third outing in a row, Presbyterian wasted little time in taking their inaugural lead of the series courtesy of Kaitlyn Tucker and Jillian Hewes.

- That senior duo sent in Grice and Mallory Fletcher (as well as Hewes reaching home on Tucker's swing) to make it 3-1 in the early stages of the finale.

- Gardner-Webb steadily chipped away at that deficit from then on, utilizing two runs in the 3rd and 5th alongside another sandwiched in between.

- Freshman Kasey Wolfe threw the first three innings of the loss, succeeded by both Jenna Greene and Peyton Duncan who faced 16 batters amongst themselves.

- The Runnin' Bulldogs have now earned five straight victories over the Blue Hose since PC captured a walk-off in last year's opener, holding back head coach David Williams' unit who reached base 11 times altogether.

UP NEXT

- Focusing directly on what's in front of them with one Big South series to go, PC will finish the 2024 regular season this Friday and Saturday with a trip to Radford. Each of the last two series versus the Highlanders has gone two-games-to-one in Presby's favor, winning a couple of thrillers in Clinton 12 months ago by 2-1 and 9-8 clips.

- Radford will approach the campaign-ender at 22-22 on the year, similarly searching for a route into the conference bracket with a divisional record of 5-10.

- ESPN+ will have coverage of the entire trio, scheduled for a 4:00 opener on May 3 followed by a 1:00 doubleheader the following day.
