PC Takes Pair of Three-Run Defeats Versus Charleston Southern

CLINTON, S.C. – Although in position to win their second Big South Conference series in three tries thanks to a walk-off victory under the lights on Friday, the Presbyterian College softball team's fortunes were reversed on Saturday afternoon as Charleston Southern pulled out a doubleheader sweep (6-3 and 4-1).

Relying on the longball to do their loudest damage in the first half of the twinbill, PC was offensively held in check by arguably the most polished pitching tandem in the division (Nealy Lamb and Annah Junge who both logged complete games).

Coupled with CSU's 23 hits throughout the DH, the Blue Hose were unable to capitalize on their Game 1 momentum from the eve prior, hovering around the middle of the pack in the Big South (4-5).

Head coach David Williams' group will compete on their home base for the last time in 2024 next weekend, putting an eight-game Clinton streak to bed by hosting USC Upstate for three more. The first outing, akin to the Bucs' layout, will be held at 6:00 PM this Friday.

NOTABLES

- Two of PC's best sluggers proved exactly why during a back-and-forth first affair, as Kasey Wolfe and Kendall Owens each cleared the fence to account for all three of the team's scores. That gives the Scotsmen 12 homers on the calendar, and in Wolfe's case, a pair of dingers within a three-game period.

- The Owens/Wolfe duo gathered four hits between them (three of which were of the extra-base variety) along with three combined RBI, manufacturing runs both early and late across the first bout.

- After throwing a stellar performance as PC used some 7th-inning magic to topple the Bucs yesterday, fifth-year luminary Jenna Greene inched closer to the 700-strikeout tally by canning three more on Saturday, a feat that has neve been accomplished by any player in school history. She sits just six away from that gargantuan number.

GAME ONE – CHARLESTON SO. (17-18, 4-4) def. PRESBYTERIAN (14-25, 4-4) – 6-3

- Wolfe launched a left-center bomb in the game's third at-bat after doing the same to South Carolina State earlier in the week, although the next five runs came from the visitors to set up a third consecutive rubber match for Williams and co.

- The closing stretch of the day's first duel leaned heavy on offense, witnessing six of its last nine scores within the final two frames.

- Wrangling in second baseman Kaitlyn Tucker during the 6th in a bid to start a four-run rally, Owen's HR would instead end Presbyterian's output for the contest, allocating a quartet of hits overall.

- Wolfe and starter Peyton Duncan shared their time in the circle, gaining six combined K's as the Buccaneers evened the series at one each.

GAME TWO – CHARLESTON SO. (18-18, 5-4) def. PRESBYTERIAN (14-26, 4-5) – 4-1

- The last act between the two Palmetto rivals adopted a more methodical pace, with Junge striking out six (a number that was matched by Greene and Duncan, who tag-teamed the finale).

- PC found themselves in a 4-0 bind by the time shortstop Emma Yanes accounted for the squad's first and only strike, an RBI-ground out that gave Wolfe the avenue to reach home.

- Charleston Southern built their advantage on a couple of run-scoring base hits, an RBI-double, and sacrifice fly ball.

UP NEXT

- Always an entertaining day at the office whenever the Blue Hose and Spartans get together, coach Williams' gang will host USC Upstate after a week of rest in the team's final Clinton appearances before finishing the spring slate with nine straight road assignments.

- Displaying a similar mark to that of CSU (18-15), Upstate has begun to craft a steady trend upwards by claiming three victories in succession over Longwood this weekend. They've earned W's in six of their last seven features, currently at 7-2 in Big South action.

- Looking to pay back their Spartanburg enemies from a sweep on the road last year, Presbyterian will enact another DH on April 13 after beginning the series next Friday.
