CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College softball team has accomplished three consecutive Big South Conference victories for the first time in three years, continuing to steer a workmanlike defense to a 4-1 Friday night win over league adversary Charleston Southern.
Junior pitcher
Peyton Duncan cruised to her ninth individual win of the campaign with a single run allowed – and an unearned one, at that – while sophomore
Kasey Wolfe tallied her third save of the spring as PC won their fourth straight contest overall.
The result of Presby's recent pitching prowess: three games in a row where the opponent has been held to just one score.
Seniors
Kendall Owens and
Mallory Fletcher have now combined for 41 RBI after driving in three runs on Friday, sending the Blue Hose to a 3-1 mark in Big South affairs and a chance for their second straight series win over a divisional foe tomorrow.
Games two and three against CSU will be carried out on Saturday, positioned for a 1:00 start. Just one victory from the Scotsmen and they'd have their first series W over the Bucs since 2022.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Over Duncan's last 17 innings in the circle, the North Carolinian has surrendered just two earned runs. The only score by the Buccaneers in Game One occurred off of an infield error in the 4
th, the only peep from the home side all evening.
- Only 48 hours after striking out nine (one shy of her personal record) in a walk-off over Wofford at home, Duncan canned four more in the series starter at Charleston. That opened the door for Wolfe to finish the job in the bottom of the 7
th with three swift outs as runners sat on 1
st and 2
nd.
- By the time CSU logged their lone run, they'd already faced a 2-0 deficit. An error allowed PC to get on the board first, while Fletcher's RBI single in the 4
th created the two-run cushion.
- Owens gave her squad some much-needed run support in the latter stages with a two-run double, her 13
th of the year which ranks fourth in the country.
- That eliminated the threat of any Charleston comeback, keeping the Bucs at bay and improving the Blue Hose to 5-1 in their last six appearances.
UP NEXT
- Presbyterian looks to stay a step ahead of the rest of the league when the sun rises on Saturday, holding thoughts of a sweep going into the DH.
- Head coach
David Williams' crew continues an 11-game sequence against schools from the state of South Carolina, winning five of their first seven in that stretch.
