ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Presbyterian College softball team stayed one game ahead of .500 on Friday afternoon in their second straight weekend away from home, making the quick trip to Rock Hill where they were bested by Boston University (13-1) but recovered to defeat Norfolk State in a 5-2 final.
Head coach
David Williams' unit got all they needed in the final two innings as they held off a feisty Spartan opponent, bouncing back from the loss to the Terriers (the same team that went 53-6 a year ago) to move to 4-0 all-time against NSU.
The Blue Hose also split victories with Western Carolina earlier this week, clinching their 11
th win of the non-conference schedule thanks to some clutch RBI's from
Kendall Owens,
Mallory Fletcher, and
Morgan Farthing.
PC will remain at Winthrop tomorrow for a couple more outings, engaging in a rematch with Norfolk at 10:00 AM before then shifting to familiar foe Queens at approximately 12:30.
GAME ONE – BOSTON UNIVERSITY def. PC, 13-1 (5 Innings)
- It was a game to throw in the bin for the Scotsmen against an opponent that has dominated the Patriot League for the better part of a decade, giving up seven runs in the top of the 3
rd and ultimately falling by 12.
- Senior first-baseman Owens was responsible for PC's lone score in the 4
th on a solo homer, her third blast in an eight-day period and the team's 16
th home run of the campaign.
- Owens also posted a double earlier in the contest, although the majority of Presby's order couldn't get by Boston U starter Kasey Ricard (eight strikeouts in 15 at-bats).
GAME TWO – PC def. NORFOLK STATE, 5-2
- Freshman pitcher
Grace Kelley showed several glimpses at the future of PC's bullpen as they atoned for their Terrier defeat, moving to a personal record of 3-0 and throwing all but two outs.
- Reigning Big South Player of the Week
Kasey Wolfe closed the door on a late NSU rally and thus grabbed her first save of the season, able to hold the Spartans to a single 7
th-inning score when they needed four to extend the game.
- Pinch-runner
Sabrina Rose tied things up at one in the second-to-last frame on a fielder's choice brought upon by Fletcher, the 17
th RBI of the semester for the senior which leads all others on the roster.
- An infield error inadvertently gave the Blue Hose their first lead of the day at an opportune moment, enabling Farthing to finish off a 3-for-3 effort at the plate with a game-altering RBI single.
- Owens' third extra-base hit of the afternoon brought home both Wolfe and
Emma Yanes in the top of the 7
th, providing more than enough cushion for the PC D to wrap up the win.
