Presbyterian Goes 50/50 with N.C. A&T

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Presbyterian College softball team split a Wednesday afternoon two-parter with the North Carolina A&T Bulldogs, the same results of two earlier meetings at a neutral site way back in February. PC snatched a 6-3 win in the first bout, while A&T delivered a 5-1 receipt.

Playing out in similar fashion to when the Blue Hose encountered the Bulldogs back in the first month of the season, head coach David Williams' gang scattered 10 hits and a couple of homers as they led by as many as six runs in round one.

That effectively shelved an eight-game losing skid from the Scotsmen, although they wouldn't be able to complete a midweek sweep as they were held scoreless in the last six innings of the nightcap.

PC will partake in a nine-day leave before returning to the field, now focused on two ultra-important Big South series that have postseason implications. They'll meet Winthrop in Rock Hill for the penultimate league set, starting the series on Friday, April 25.

NOTABLES

- Presbyterian mixed a perfect blend of steady offense and suffocating pitching by junior Peyton Duncan in a Game One where they never trailed.

- Duncan matched her career-high with 10 strikeouts, collecting at least one K in six out of seven frames and hitting double-digits in that department for the third time in her career.

- She'd throw the entire affair as the Blue Hose handled A&T, the sixth time this year that Duncan pitched at least seven innings while allowing two earned runs or fewer.

- Senior outfielder Mallory Fletcher and junior catcher Maddi Wood each cleared the fence to give PC some key separation, while Morgan Farthing got her squad on the board earlier in the day with another extra-base swing that scored a pair.

- Game One was the first time since March 14 that Presby was able to reach 10-plus hits in one contest (the last was an 8-6 triumph against USC Upstate), and the result was win number 20 on the season.

GAME ONE – PC def. NORTH CAROLINA A&T, 6-3

- While Duncan got in a rhythm early and kept knocking Bulldogs back in succession, PC's bats were similarly smooth. Farthing's two-run double in her first plate appearance set the mood for the game, while Gracie DeCuir added an RBI-single in the top of the 4th.

- Now on top by a trio, Presbyterian put themselves in terrific shape once Wood and Fletcher tag teamed home runs in the last two innings. That boosted the A&T deficit from three to six and put PC back in the win column.

- Although the Bulldogs would luck out with some infield mishaps that carved the lead in half, the Blue Hose settled down in due time and forced a foul-out to third-baseman Kasey Wolfe that signaled the end.

- Fourteen different players had at least one at-bat for Williams' bunch, as Duncan's grip on the game led to a mere three hits by the home side.

GAME TWO – NORTH CAROLINA A&T def. PC, 5-1

- Wolfe and freshman Grace Kelley shared their time in the circle as A&T responded for the split, ending the game on a 5-0 run that took five innings to materialize.

- Audrey Burton (a rookie infielder) drove in the only run of the matchup for the blue and garnet, an RBI ground-out that brought in Baxleigh Arnette in the opening stanza.

- The Bulldogs gathered four doubles in Game Two, along with a run-scoring triple that served as their first run of the rematch.
