CHARLESTON, S.C. – After making a strong first impression to the brand-new season with three individual champions at the Princeton Open, the third-ranked Presbyterian College women's wrestling team will split their roster in half this weekend for two events in the Carolinas.
On Saturday, a select few Blue Hose will participate in another tournament at Mount Olive, dubbed the "Trojan Open". Later that day, PC will be showcased at the third annual "Throwdown on the Yorktown" duals which are held aboard an active military battleship in Charleston.
This is the first time that the Yorktown event will take place over two days, with Presby going up against extremely stiff competition: #7 Grand Valley State and #2 Iowa tomorrow, which is followed by #24 Delaware State on Sunday.
Head coach
Brian Vutianitis sent his team to Yorktown in both of the prior iterations, defeating Campbellsville by two points at the inaugural event two years ago and going 1-1 on the aircraft carrier last year.
PC owns their highest-ever preseason ranking at #3, boasting eight wrestlers in the current top 10 for their respective weight class. The Scotsmen won the Southeast Region Championship for the second consecutive season last winter, qualifying all 10 classes to Nationals where they came in 5
th-place as a unit.

YORKTOWN VETERANS
- Created in 2024 and rapidly growing in popularity ever since, Presbyterian featured in the first-ever Throwdown on the Yorktown where they edged out Campbellsville 23-21.
-
Chloe Dearwester,
May Cuyler, and
Carina Giangeruso all won in the early stages of their freshman seasons, while PC sealed the victory with a 10-0 technical fall in the 207-lb. match.
- The Blue Hose returned to Yorktown 12 months ago where they came up short against then-#1 Iowa but rebounded with a 40-6 blowout over Delaware State (who was in their first season as a program).
- Cuyler and
Alyssa Mahan each won their bouts against the Hawkeyes with a tech and a 9-6 decision, respectively. They'd go on to make up two of PC's six All-Americans by the end of the season.
- Presbyterian picked up four pins in the Delaware State victory, helping the team finish with a sensational 18-3 record in dual play last year. PC defeated eight schools in the national top 20.
SCOUTING THE YORKTOWN FIELD
- All three of Presby's opponents at Yorktown this weekend have wrestled in at least one tournament this month, each with solid results in different venues.
- This is year three for Grand Valley State, a Division II member who finished 4
th at Nationals after assembling a 12-3 ledger in dual action.
- GVSU crossed paths with Presbyterian at the NWCA National Duals back in January, giving PC a rare loss by a 24-17 margin. The Lakers ended with one gold and two silver medals at Nationals.
- Iowa claimed back-to-back team National Championships in 2024 and 2025 but saw that streak end last winter as McKendree took home the grand prize. The Hawkeyes still finished second overall and return two national champs: Valarie Solorio (103) and Kylie Welker (180).
- Six Iowa wrestlers came in 1
st at the Luther Hill Open last weekend, and the Hawkeyes hit the mats again in New York City just 24 hours before the Yorktown extravaganza.
- As mentioned above, Presbyterian pummeled Delaware State last year by 34 points. The Hornets came in 7
th place at the same regional tourney that PC won for the second straight time.
- DSU started their sophomore season with a solid effort in an East Stroudsburg tournament, claiming three individual titles by Willow White (138), Louise Juitt (145), and Deionna Borders (207).
PROSPERED IN PRINCETON
- Coach Vutianitis submitted 19 wrestlers to the Princeton Open on Sunday, getting 10 of them in the top three for their weight class and stacking up 31 pins altogether.
-
Zoe Griffith (138) captured her second career championship with a 3:48 fall over her opponent from Blair Academy, while
May Cuyler and
Maria Aiono also grabbed gold in 160 and 207.
- The Blue Hose have won seven individual championships at Princeton specifically in their last two appearances there. On Sunday, seven PC wrestlers finished either 1
st or 2
nd.
- Five of Presby's six All-Americans from last season performed at Princeton and won 20 matches between them. Griffith, Aiono, and Cuyler went 12-0 as a whole, with all but one of those wins coming by either pin or technical fall.
