CLINTON, S.C. – The offensive firepower was overwhelming for the Presbyterian College softball team on Wednesday afternoon in their return home from a brief road trip, pulling off a midweek sweep over North Carolina A&T by respective scores of 7-6 (nine innings) and 11-8.
PC roasted the Aggies for 25 hits in total, eight of which were good for extra bases. The Blue Hose capitalized on a windy day to clear the fence twice and improve to 8-6 on the year.
The quintet of
Cierra Grice,
Morgan Farthing,
Avery Robinson,
Blair Darby, and
Hali Duke batted .525 together on 21 hits throughout the DH.
Farthing was the hero of Game One with a walk-off single to bring in pinch-runner
Sabrina Rose, symbolizing the first win for the Scotsmen in a nine-inning contest since 2023.
Now at 7-4 when playing in Clinton, head coach
David Williams' roster will visit Mercer for a five-game tournament this weekend. They'll play two times on Friday and Saturday, with a final bow in Macon on Sunday.
NOTABLES
- The bats were seemingly twice as wide for Presby in the sweep, producing five innings with at least two runs and moving to 9-2 all-time against their former Big South adversary.
- Farthing was a near-impossible out for A&T on Wednesday, going 4-of-6 at the plate along with three walks, five RBI, a triple, and the aforementioned game-winner.
- Both Duke and Darby transmitted two-run homers in the first half of the doubleheader, with the former stacking up six RBI in total.
- Grice (a freshman at the third-base spot) was similarly explosive in the two wins, batting .750 (6-for-8) with a pair of doubles and four runs scored.
- Robinson (a two-way standout) grabbed four singles in eight appearances, while also pitching the final four frames of the extra-inning victory and the first 3.2 of the next affair.
- Senior
Peyton Duncan came on in relief to close out the nightcap, retiring 10 consecutive batters and earning her 25
th college win.
GAME ONE – Presbyterian def. North Carolina A&T, 7-6 (Nine Innings)
- Both teams homered twice in a meeting that required four lead changes in order for Presbyterian to avoid the loss, as Darby and Duke each went yard in the 1
st and 3
rd.
- A shortstop error by the Aggies enabled PC to reach a 5-5 tie in the 6
th inning, although A&T countered with an RBI-double in the top of the 8
th to cast doubt on the outcome.
- Duke ensured the game would continue with a sacrifice flyball in the bottom of that same inning (scoring pinch-hitter
Molly Mattas). Farthing eventually snagged the W with the walk-off knock in inning number nine.
- The last time that the Blue Hose appeared in a nine-inning marathon and came away with a win: three seasons ago (also at home versus Radford in a 2-1 result).
-
Kylie Rast got the starting nod in the circle for Game One, delivering a season-best seven strikeouts and handing the ball to Robinson in the 6
th to keep the Aggies at bay.
- In the top of the 9
th (just before Farthing's walk-off), Robinson denied a third-base runner from coming home with a huge K. Rose was able to get to third thanks to a wild pitch, easily getting home after Farthing's swing.
GAME TWO – Presbyterian def. North Carolina A&T, 11-8
- Williams stuck with Robinson for nearly four full innings of the rematch (giving her 115 pitches for the day), and she exited with a 7-6 deficit as neither side had cooled off.
- N.C. A&T collected an 8-6 lead near the midway point, but PC would finish the sweep by scoring five unanswered runs and relying on Duncan who did not concede a single run or hit.
- Mattas started that rally with a sac fly to bring Darby home, then Darby herself tied it at eight apiece with a double in the 5
th. Farthing busted a two-run triple in that same inning, before centerfielder
Gracie DeCuir added an insurance run with a base hit in the 6
th.
- Presbyterian's 15 hits in Game Two are a season-high, with nine of those connections happening in the 1
st and 5
th stanzas.
