CLINTON, S.C. – Day two of the Blue Hose Invitational was not as kind to the Presbyterian College softball team as the previous evening was, falling to two talented opponents on Saturday: Western Michigan (8-6) and Dayton (3-0).
In a game that featured numerous momentum swings, PC put up six consecutive late runs against the Broncos but yielded a three-spot in the top of the 7
th to take their first loss of the young season.
The second contest was far less dramatic on the offensive end, as the Scotsmen were one-hit by Dayton. A single run came through in three different innings during the second half of the twinbill versus the Flyers.
Saturday was the first-ever meeting between PC and both visitors, as the Blue Hose will look to regroup for a fourth game tomorrow opposite Morehead State.
First pitch against the Eagles is allotted for 2:30 and will be streamed on ESPN+.
GAME ONE – Western Michigan def. Presbyterian, 8-6
- WMU's 7
th-inning rally moved them to 3-0 on the year, although the end result was nearly a different tune. Freshman
Cierra Grice submitted her first career RBI on a double in the 5
th which started PC's flurry.
-
Blair Darby and
Morgan Farthing followed suit in the next frame with two more base hits that scored one run each, and Presby's lead expanded to 6-3 on a two-score extra-base swing from senior
Molly Mattas.
- However, the Broncos delivered a fierce counterstrike in their last chance. Ultimately, an infield error tied up the count at six apiece, before Western Michigan's Bella Duncan sent in a game-winning longball over the rightfield barrier.
-
Avery Robinson and
Baxleigh Arnette went four-of-seven at the plate, while sophomore transfer pitcher
Kylie Rast got her first start in a Blue Hose uniform and distributed 6.1 innings along with six K's.
- In the end, Western Michigan was able to retake the advantage off of the PC bullpen and win a matchup that entailed 14 total runs and 18 hits.
GAME TWO – Dayton def. Presbyterian, 3-0
- The second half of Saturday's DH centered around Dayton's pitching tandem of Camrynn Linneman and reigning All-A-10 pick Izzy Kemp.
- Presbyterian could not solve that combo, getting their first hit of the game with two outs already tallied in the 7
th.
-
Peyton Duncan threw 133 pitches in her second straight day of competition, tossing a complete game after posting a one-hitter herself against Le Moyne on Friday.
- Dayton kept the ball inside the park all night, finding their three runs on a pair of singles and an RBI double.
