Ten PC Wrestlers Compete for National Championship Status

CORALVILLE, Iowa – It's all been building to this for the two-time Southeast Region title-winning Presbyterian College women's wrestling team, headed to the Midwest over the next two days for the NCAA National Championship tournament.

One of just four schools nationwide to qualify all 10 weight classes to Nationals, the Blue Hose are front and center in the first year that the women's wrestling postseason is governed by the NCAA (the NWCA had that distinction previously).

Due to the change in governing body, teams are allowed to send just one wrestler per weight class to Nationals as long as they performed well enough at their respective Region bracket.

Presbyterian, Iowa, North Central, and McKendree were the only institutions to go 10-for-10 in that department, as the Blue Hose will be represented by Sloane Kruger, Chloe Dearwester, Jenna Anderson, Alyssa Mahan, Kassey Daugherty, Carina Giangeruso, Maddie Kubicki, May Cuyler, Isabella Gretzinger, and Maria Aiono.

Two-time Region Coach of the Year Brian Vutianitis has directed his program to a top-10 national finish in each of the last three seasons, coming in 6th place at this event in 2025 and claiming six All-Americans.

REGION CHAMPS…AGAIN!

- In a region tournament that featured two other top-ten clubs (King and the host Emmanuel), PC repeated as the Southeast Champions by having nine wrestlers finish either 1st or 2nd and taking four individual titles.

- There are now six athletes on Presby's current roster that have won a Region Championship, as Giangeruso and Cuyler realized that accomplishment last spring. This time around, it would be Dearwester, Kubicki, Gretzinger, and Aiono doing the honors.

- It was a poetic story for a team that assembled a strong 18-3 dual record over the winter, defeating eight nationally-ranked schools in the regular season and five foes inside the top 10.

- The Blue Hose won a total of 14 individual championships in tournament competition this year, topping the Region chart once again with one of the deepest rosters in America.

NATIONAL SEEDINGS

- The NCAA announced its inaugural National Championship field last week, setting up each bracket entirely and revealing which wrestlers earned a national seed.

- Seven of PC's 10 qualifiers will be seeded in this massive bracket, the highest of which is sophomore May Cuyler in class 160 who was given the #5 ranking after placing 6th in this tourney as a rookie.

- 110-pounder Chloe Dearwester was seeded 6th in her group with a personal record of 21-2 this season, going into Nationals with a victory in 15 of her last 16 appearances.

- With both of them still having two seasons of eligibility in the tank, Cuyler and Dearwester have combined for an 89-14 record since arriving at Presbyterian in the fall of 2024.

- Mahan (124), Daugherty (131), Giangeruso (138), Kubicki (145), and Aiono (207) where all given the #8 seed in their respective groups. Giangeruso was PC's highest placer at Nationals last year (4th), doing so as a true freshman.

- Kruger (103), Anderson (110), and Gretzinger (180) will enter the tournament without a national seed beside their name, although they've won 81 combined matches throughout the campaign.

2025 NATIONALS RECAP

- Presbyterian set a new program benchmark 12 months ago by sending nearly half their roster to Nationals and ending with a 6th-place standing and six All-Americans.

- Behind Giangeruso (who posted a 33-5 personal record that year), PC obtained four other top-10 achievements by Kubicki, Cuyler, Aiono, and Mahan.

- The only non-freshman of PC's 10 qualifiers that doesn't have any Nationals experience is Daugherty in the 131-lb. class, who came up short in the Region Championship match two weeks ago to end an outstanding 25-match winning streak.

- Dearwester will be a favorite to land All-American accolades after qualifying but not placing a year ago. Her 15 pins are the most on the Blue Hose roster, taking down King's Avery Kibelbek in less than three minutes to win the Region crown.
