Douglass Becomes Second PC Wrestler to Advance to SoCon Championship Match

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Second-seeded Reed Douglass of the Presbyterian College men's wrestling team made Blue Hose history on Friday evening in the first half of the Southern Conference Championship tournament, winning two bouts to make it to tomorrow's title match in weight class 184.

Altogether, three PC athletes are still in the hunt as all nine league schools send one wrestler to the tournament. Christian Anderson (157) and Brandon Jacoby (165) also advanced due to forfeits in the consolation round.

Douglass will go head-to-head with the number one seed Tomas Brooker of Appalachian State at 3:00 Saturday, aiming to become the first wrestler in program history to receive an automatic bid to the National Championship bracket later this month in Cleveland.

NOTABLES

- A New York native who narrowly missed out on an All-Conference bid despite a perfect 7-0 record against league opponents in the regular season, Douglass won both his matches on Friday by standard decision.

- It was a nail-biter against seventh-seeded Cody Kirk (Davidson) and sixth-seeded Brant Cracraft (Campbell), edging them out 9-7 and 8-5 respectively.

- Douglass vs. Brooker is a matchup that did not happen when PC faced App State back in January, as he instead vanquished Joe Zovistoski via 15-5 MD inside Templeton Gymnasium.

- Jacoby and Anderson were both defeated in their opening-round contests, but will live to see Saturday after three combined wins by forfeit.

- A win by Douglass over Brooker tomorrow would give him a 10-0 SoCon record when factoring in the postseason. He has posted a 15-4 personal record this year and will at minimum take a silver medal in Asheville.

- The last time that a Blue Hose wrestler advanced to the SoCon title match: three seasons ago when 125-pounder Dominic Chavez accomplished that feat.
