BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Although able to create consistent traffic in Friday evening's series opener against Big South Conference rival Gardner-Webb on the road, the Presbyterian College softball team was unable to get themselves on the scoreboard in a 2-0 defeat.
Junior
Avery Robinson and G-W's Alli Stidham had quite the pitcher's duel to begin this series (which will resume with a Saturday doubleheader), each bending but not breaking in a game that zoomed just past 90 minutes in length.
In the end, PC stranded eight runners as they fell to 15-26 overall and 3-7 versus league opponents. Webb's first score of the day was unearned due to an infield error.
Each of the last four losses for the Blue Hose have occurred by two runs or fewer, as they'll try to rebound tomorrow for a 1:00 start. ESPN+ will again provide coverage of the DH.
FINAL SCORE: Gardner-Webb, 2 – Presbyterian, 0
RECORDS: Presbyterian (15-26, 3-7) | Gardner-Webb (25-16, 5-5)
LOCATION: Brinkley Stadium (Boiling Springs, N.C.)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Robinson did an exceptional job at quieting one of the most productive offenses in the division. She conceded a single earned run (in the home-half of the 6
th, no less) against a team that entered with a collective batting average of .351 which is inside the nation's top 20.
- Gardner-Webb never cleared the fence against Robinson – something they do quite often – but the run support for Presby was unfortunately shy throughout.
- The Blue Hose never had a player advance to third base in Game One, as G-W scored a late RBI single to settle the final margin at 2-0. It was Robinson's seventh complete game of the semester.
- Sophomore shortstop
Baxleigh Arnette nailed a one-out double in the 7
th as the Scotsmen attempted to pull closer, but the tying run did not reach in the aftermath via a strikeout and a grounder to third.
- Arnette and senior
Blair Darby each had a couple of hits in the loss, with the latter also adding a walk. Rookie
Hali Duke's on-base streak was extended to 21 consecutive games.
