Adam Herendeen is in his fourth season as the head coach of the men's tennis program.
This past season, PC posted its third straight 20-win season, going 20-9 overall under Herendeen's leadership. Two individual players in Ben Kelley and Danny Bruce were named Conference Flight Champions, while the duo of Joel Roberts and Ben Kelley were the No. 2 doubles Flight Champion, as well as selected to the Big South All-Conference Team. Freshman Alejandro Bejar set the PC record for most singles wins in a season with a 24-2 record, and the team earned seven Big South weekly awards. The greatly-improved program boasts a 66-24 record in four seasons under the Blue Hose alumnus.
In 2013-14, the Blue Hose reached new heights in Herendeen's third season, winning Presbyterian College's first-ever Big South Conference regular season championship in any sport. Herendeen captured the Big South Conference Coach of the Year award and guided Grayson Mills to the Player of the Year honors and Diego Manzanas to the Freshman of the Year award. It marked the first time since 2008 that a Big South member swept the three major men’s tennis awards.
Herendeen helped PC to a Division I-record 25 wins and the team's first-ever Division I ITA national ranking.
Herendeen's second season saw another stellar season, guiding the Blue Hose to their second straight Big South Conference Championship runner-up finish. PC went 21-10 under Herendeen’s leadership, the most wins in a season in the Division I and II eras and more wins than ever posted by Bobby McKee or Patric Hynes during their tenures as head coach. The team’s Division I-best 5-3 Big South record also sent the team into the league’s postseason tournament with the No. 3 seed, its highest-ever Big South entry.
In a dynamic first season, Herendeen helped the Blue Hose to numerous Division I-era records and a trip to the Big South Conference Championship match. PC became the first seven-seed to win a Big South tournament match as the Blue Hose downed the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds en route to a runner-up finish.
Under Herendeen's direction, the squad also set the record for most singles wins in a single PC Division season (14) and most doubles wins in a season (20). Four Blue Hose broke the 10 singles wins plateau, as well.
The PC alumnus served as an assistant coach for both tennis programs for two years after his graduation in 2009.
Herendeen helped both teams to new Division I era-high team and individual win totals in 2011. The men’s team recorded 11 victories and the women’s team nearly doubled their 2010 record, improving to 9-11 from five wins.
His recruiting and academic supervision also proved instrumental in the teams earning ITA All-Academic Team status in 2011, given to programs with a cumulative team grade point average of 3.2 or above. Seven total student-athletes also earned ITA Scholar-Athlete honors for earning over a 3.5 GPA.
In 2010, his first season as an assistant coach for the PC tennis program, Herendeen helped both the men's and women's program increase their win total from the 2009 campaign. The men's team finished with seven wins while the women doubled their victories and finished with five. Herendeen also assisted the women's team to their first Big South Conference win since the move to Division I when the Blue Hose downed Liberty 4-3 last season.
He was also instrumental in the recruitment of solid freshman classes for both teams, helping sign five freshman to the men's program and five for the women's program for this season.
Herendeen had a solid career for PC and was a four year letterwinner during his time playing for head coach Patric Hynes. During his first two seasons with the Blue Hose, Herendeen never lost a match.
A native of Douglasville, Ga., Herendeen earned his degree in religion. At Alexander H.S., he was a four-time all-county selection and was the county Player of the Year as a senior. Rated No. 23 in the state as a senior, he guided his squad to a No. 6 ranking in the state.
Herendeen lives in Clinton with his wife, Erin.
