HIGH POINT, N.C.-A difficult six match stretch against the top half of the Big South Conference continues for Presbyterian College, as the Blue Hose fell to High Point 22-30, 21-30, 19-30. At 15-10 overall, PC now moves to face off against Winthrop on Saturday, a start time of 2 p.m.
As the Panthers streak reached nine consecutive matches, PC was led behind the front row combination of Kelsey McKee with 11 kills and Heather Swain with 10 kills. Rachel Lewis, who became the third PC player with 4,000 assists in her career chimed in 30 assists on the match. The back row was led by Lewis' 13 digs, while teammate Elizabeth Heineman had her 22nd double-digit dig performance with 12.
Trailing by a 2-0 deficit in the third game, the Blue Hose overcame an early five point run by the Panthers to knot the game two times, before HPU extended the lead to 12-7. Following a PC timeout, the game would remain back-and-forth, with leads fluctuating between six and seven points reaching a 19-12 Panther lead. Despite two kills by McKee and one each from Kettles and Lanchester down the stretch, High Point would complete the sweep with a 30-19 victory.
Eight ties in the first 11 points for each team, including two occasions in which Presbyterian College led by two points, defined the opening stretch of the second game. High Point grabbed a seven point advantage behind the service game of Audie Gonzalez, leading 18-11, which was halted by a Panthers service error. Swain continued solid play for the Blue Hose, recording four kills in game two action, along with kills by McKee and Amanda Kettles that closed out the game for PC.
Lewis surpassed the 4,000-assist mark for her career in the opening game of the match, registering 15 against the Panthers. She sparked a PC squad that remained close at 10-5 early on in the match. With the lead shifting between six and seven points, High Point pulled ahead to take a match-high nine point lead at 23-14. Behind five kills, three individually from Swain, the front row of Mason and McKee would cut the lead to 25-18 before HPU closed out the game on by scoring five of the final nine points.
