PC Snaps Losing Streak

BUIES CREEK, N.C.- Inside a humid Carter Gymnasium on the campus of Campbell University, Presbyterian College volleyball ended a seven-match skid with a four-game triumph on Tuesday, winning by scores of 30-17, 32-34, 30-25, 30-10.

Winning their second match over the Camels this season, the front row was led by the trio of Kelsey McKee (11 kills), Amanda Kettles (11 kills) and Lauren Mason (10 kills). Rachel Lewis with 18 digs, Elizabeth Heineman adding 16 digs and Mason's 12 digs completed a solid back row play. Ashley Dunlap (four aces), Heineman (three aces) and two each from Amanda Davis, Justine Lanchester and Mason posed threats for Campbell all night in the service game.

PC (16-11) returned to form by closing out Campbell 30-10, allowing the fewest points all season for a single game. The Blue Hose grabbed a 14-8 lead after a kill by Kettles, before rattling off eight consecutive points with Heineman in serve to extend the lead to 22-9. Two kills by Heather Swain down the stretch closed out the 30-10 win.

In similar fashion to the September 7th meeting between the two, Presbyterian won game three, this time by a 30-25 advantage. Seven ties over the first 30 points combined, including a four point lead for PC, set the stage for a 15-15 tie. A service ace by Heineman and kill by Lanchester opened up a small lead for PC, before the game reached a final tie at 24-24. Again with Heineman serving, the Blue Hose grabbed the advantage, forcing two attack errors, along with kills by Kettles and Lanchester for the 30-25 victory.

Trailing for much of the second game, including two occasions which the Camels led by five points, PC rallied in the latter stages behind Davis to pull within two points. Trailing 28-25, Davis got a kill by Mason, followed by a Campbell attack error and a service ace to keep the Blue Hose within striking distance. Following back-to-back attack errors by Campbell the game was knotted at 29-29. Three ties later and the score tied 32-32 due to a Carolina Hammersley service error, CU closed out the match on consecutive kills by Emily Werner and Ashley Weers for the 34-32 error.

Presbyterian grabbed the first game in the match behind Heineman who broke a 4-4 tie with the assist off kills by Lanchester and Kettles. Amanda Davis extended the PC lead to five points by forcing two attack errors and sending a service ace past the Campbell defense. With the Camels rallying, and Lewis serving, PC stretched the lead to 15-11 with the assistance of front row kills by Kettles and McKee. The decisive stretch in the game came with the Blue Hose leading 17-12 and Mason serving. Mason would account for two service aces, four CU attack errors, meanwhile giving PC a 23-13 lead. Two kills by Swain down the stretch helped close out the 30-17 win.
