Blue Hose Sweep Radford

CLINTON, S.C. ? For the ninth time in the 2007 season, the Presbyterian College volleyball swept the opposition, completing the home season with a 30-25, 30-28, 30-22 victory over Radford University. The Blue Hose finish 6-3 inside the Templeton Center, improving to 19-11 overall. Meanwhile, the Highlanders leave with an 8-22 record.

 

Senior Lauren Mason led PC statistically with 15 kills and 17 defensive digs, with front row teammates Heather Swain (12 kills) and Kelsey McKee (11 kills) leading the way for 55 kills. On the defensive front Elizabeth Heineman notched her 26th double-digit dig game, leading the way with 20 digs. Amanda Davis also joined Mason and Heineman, contributing 11 digs.

 

With the opportunity to close out the game with a sweep for the first time since Sept. 25 against Fayetteville State, the Blue Hose took a 12-6 lead behind two kills each from Swain and Amanda Kettles. Trading points back-and-forth, Davis stepped up her service game again by forcing cosecutive attack errors and grab a 20-14 advantage. The six-point lead was a mainstay until a Lindsay Rupert kill paired up with an attack error to reduce the deficit to 24-20 in PC's favor. Two kills apiece from Mason and Swain down the stretch made for the 30-22 final.

 

A solid Amanda Davis service game combined with four kills each by Heather Swain and Mason held Radford to nine points and the 20-9 lead. The Highlanders Lauren Clary gathered two attack errors, a kill from Sullivan and a service ace to narrow the score to 23-17. RU rallied with two kills each from Maggie Wagner and Melinda Clelland combined with the service game of Lindsay Rupert to close within two points at 28-26 in the latter stages of the game. Kills by the front row tandem of Lanchester and Mason completed the 30-28 victory.

 

Leading by a 6-3, Heineman stepped in to drive the lead to seven points by forcing three consecutive attack errors by the Highlanders to step ahead 10-3. Holding Radford to five points, PC would counter by scoring 10 points reaching a game-high 11 point advantage on a kill by Mason. Radford rallied behind eight kills, including four by Melinda Clelland and two each from Alexis Miller and Jessica Sullivan. Taking advantage of five Blue Hose attack errors, the lead was narrowed to 29-25 before a Heather Swain drove home the game winner.

 

Presbyterian enters the final week of play, starting with a Tuesday evening match at USC Upstate.

 

Presbyterian vs. Radford Post Game Notes

?        Presbyterian College completed the first sweep since win over Fayetteville State on Sept. 25. The Blue Hose now have nine on the season.

?        With a 19-10 record, Chris Belshe has increased the victory total by 10 from last season, marking the third best improvement since 1987.

      ?        Heather Swain has now registered double-digit kills in five games this season.
