WILMINGTON, N.C.- Presbyterian College battled through a tough shooting performance with host UNC Wilmington, as the Seahawks emerged with a 91-59 victory. The season opener and first meeting between the two teams, the Lady Blue Hose were led in scoring by Sharie Hopkins' 12 points on six-of-eight shooting from the field.
Three others reached double figures in scoring for the Lady Blue Hose (0-1) with 11 points by Amy Jones, Kristin Kidd and Katlin Moore. Jones finished a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line, while Kidd led the team from beyond the arch on a 2-for-2 night. Moore, who was 4-of-11 from the field, also grabbed three rebounds.
Trailing 43-30 at the break, PC was emersed in a tough shooting night, which continued early on the second half. The Seahawks stretched the lead to 25 points before Kidd hit back-to-back three pointers which cut the lead to 63-44. Presbyterian faced continued pressure from the combination of Treasure Johnson (16 points) and Sahsha Taylor (21 points) down the stretch. Outside jumpers by Erin Doherty, Jones and three points by Katlin Moore provided points in the final stages of the game.
Falling behind early in the game by a 10-0 deficit, Jones knotched the first points in Lady Blue Hose Division I history by connecting on foul shots. PC would score on back-to-back possessions, pulling the game to 12-6 before UNCW countered with an 11-2 run behind three points by Treasure Johnson.
Reaching a half-high 14 point advantage, the Seahawks were clamped defensively as Sharie Hopkins scored four points and Kristin Kidd added three points to close the deficit to 36-25 with 3:22 remaining. The Lady Blue Hose continued to chip away at the lead by UNCW, as Amy Jones connected on free throws with 1:13 that sliced the lead to 37-30. The Seahawks finished the half on a 6-1 run including fast break points by Treasure Johnson, Stephanie Fernald and Sheronda McLean.
Presbyterian now travels to meet East Carolina on Sunday, with a 2 p.m. game time.
