ORANGEBURG, S.C.- Kristin Kidd sank the game winning shot with 46 seconds in the half, as Presbyterian College held off South Carolina State to earn the first NCAA Division I victory in women's basketball history, 63-62.
Kidd led three Lady Blue Hose players in scoring with 18 points (3-4, 3-pt.), while Sharie Hopkins chipped in 15 points and eight rebounds. Senior Amy Jones was the catalyst for the offense in the second half, scoring 11 points which included three 3-point baskets, which pushed her to 14 for the game. Kristin Johnson (18 points) countered for the Bulldogs, scoring 10 second half points, while teammate Jenell Moore pulled down 13 rebounds and added 10 points.
PC moves to 1-7 on the season, while the Lady Bulldogs drop to 2-5 overall.
With PC leading 59-50 with 3:51 on the clock, SCSU countered with a 10-2 run, converting back-to-back three point buckets by Sophilia Hipps along with layups by Patience Figgins and Kristin Johnson for a one-point PC lead. After Kidd hit a layup in the paint with less than one minute on the clock, the Lady Blue Hose defense staved off two late runs to close out the victory.
PC took a first half lead into the locker room for the first time this season, behind double-digit performances by Kristin Kidd and Sharie Hopkins. Kidd used her complete arsenal, including two buckets from beyond the arc, in the process of scoring 12 points. Hopkins scored 11 points on a combination of three shots in the field and converting five-of-seven free throws.
Hitting on 83.3% (5-for-6) from three-point range spelled the difference for the Lady Blue Hose. PC opened the contest on a 7-3 run, four points coming from Kidd, and extended the lead to 13-6 at the 11:43 mark of the half after an Amy Jones three-pointer. After trading baskets with the Lady Bulldogs, the lead was cut to two points following a series of free throws by Rasheed Jones and Sasha Sales. PC countered with back-to-back 3-pointers by Bridget Takach and Kidd, followed by a Hopkins layup that moved the lead to 31-23 with 3:07 remaining. The Lady Blue Hose finished the half by scoring three points, all by Hopkins, for the 34-27 lead.
