PC Remains Unbeaten Against Big South

CHARLESTON, S.C.-For the first time since early in the month of September, Presbyterian College was forced beyond three games, however the result was the same as the last thirteen outings, in the form of a win. The Blue Hose won their fourth road game by a 30-26, 25-30, 30-22, 30-26 margin over Charleston Southern. The victory moves the season record to 14-4 overall, while Charleston Southern falls to 7-9.
 

Lauren Mason guided PC with 21 kills, while adding 14 digs while front row teammates Kelsey McKee (14 kills), Justine Lanchester (10 digs) and Sarah Parker Mounce (10 kills) provided a front row domination that Charleston Southern. Elizabeth Heineman paced the back row with 18 digs, with Rachel Lewis (15) and Ashley Dunlap adding 13 digs each.


Despite jumping out to an early 4-0 lead, behind Lanchester, the fourth game would be knotted on seven occasions with the last coming at 15-15. PC put some breathing room between themselves where they would lead by five points on two occasions, the latter being a 22-17 margin, before the Buccaneers crawled back into the game. Charleston Southern rattled the Blue Hose with two attack errors and along with three kills the score would again reach a tie at 22-22. Freshman Ashley Dunlap gave PC a lift with a service ace and along with kills by Amanda Kettles and forcing six errors down the stretch, PC closed out the game for the 30-26 win.


Presbyterian College came out with a vengeance in the third game, assuming a 6-1 lead behind the service game of Justine Lanchester. Lanchester would ace Charleston Southern in consecutive serves, force an attack error, and take advantage of a McKee kill for the five-point cushion. Again the Buccaneers closed the gap, eventually mounting a two-point lead at 12-10, before PC stormed back with a 9-3 rally. Two kills Mason and Sarah Parker Mounce led a charge that opened open a 19-14 advantage. Mounce continued her solid performance, accounting for two kills in the final 11 points, along with two kills by Lanchester which created a solid front row rotation. Mason drove home the game's final kill, making for seven in the 30-22 victory.


With the score tied at 17-17, courtesy an assisted block by McKee and Kettles, Presbyterian College took a four-point lead at 21-17 before the momentum of the game shifted. Charleston Southern would score eight of the next ten points to assume a 25-23 advantage. Despite two timeouts in the waning stages of the game, the Blue Hose were unable to overtake the Buccaneers who closed out with two kills and a service ace for the 30-25 win. Subsequently the longest PC streak of consecutive games won, since the induction of rally scoring began in 2001, ended at 26 straight games.


The match opened with PC falling behind by an 0-2 margin before the Blue Hose would put together a 12-8 run, culminating in a 12-10 score. Five players were responsible for the next eight Presbyterian points, including kills by Kettles and Lewis, even though the Bucs hung tough to stay within two points at 20-18. Leading by a game-high six points, 24-18, PC forced Charleston Southern into a second timeout. Two kills each by Mason and McKee, combined with a service ace by Amanda Davis cinched the 30-26 victory. The active hands of McKee were instrumental in the game, as she and Mason shared honors with five kills and an assisted block in the game.
