PC Beats Charleston Southern at Home

CLINTON, S.C.?The Presbyterian College volleyball claimed a 3-1 victory over Charleston Southern this afternoon at the Templeton Center to finish their home weekend with a 1-1 record.

The Blue Hose downed the Lady Bucs 27-25, 25-21, 19-25, 25-23 to grab their first home win of the season.  PC improves to 3-5 in Big South action and 6-14 overall with the win.  Charleston Southern falls to 13-12 with a 2-6 record in the conference.

The first set saw PC race to a 12-6 lead, but the Lady Bucs tied the score at 14.  Both teams battled back and forth for the remainder of the set, which included ties at 21 and 23 before the Blue Hose were able to pull off the win 27-25.

The second set was another close affair before a kill by Lisa Shelley (Columbia, S.C./Blythewood) put PC up 20-17.  With help from a Shelley service ace and a kill by Kelsey McKee (Greenville, S.C./Eastside) the Blue Hose went on to win the set 25-21.

Coming out of the break with a 2-0 lead the Blue Hose couldn't hang on to their momentum and fell behind 10-14.  The Lady Bucs stepped up their offense in the third set and hit .393 as a team on their way to a 19-25 win.

The Blue Hose again grabbed an early lead in the fourth set when they took a 7-2 advantage.  Behind two service aces by Elizabeth Heineman (Normal, Ill./Normal West) and a kill by Shelley, PC extended it's lead to 11-5.  The Blue Hose would not relinquish the lead, though Charleston Southern would tie the set at 20.  A ball handling error by the Lady Bucs and a kill from McKee gave PC a 22-20 lead.  Kills by Amanda Kettles (Canton, Ga./Cherokee) and Heather Swain (Woodruff, S.C./Southside Christian) put the Blue Hose up 24-20 before an attack error by Charleston Southern gave PC the 25-22 win.

The Blue Hose had three players reach double digits in kills, led by Kettles' 17.  Shelley and Swain chipped in 14 and 10, while Heineman led all players with 18 digs.  Rachel Lewis (Bloomington, Ill./Tri-Valley) recorded 47 assists and 13 digs.

The Lady Bucs were paced by Amanda Hill's 20 kills and 12 digs each from Tricia Rodl and Sam Sasan.

PC returns to the road on Tuesday, Oct. 21 when they travel to Gardner-Webb for a 7 p.m. conference match.
