PC Scares Off Winthrop in Three

CLINTON, S.C.?The Presbyterian College volleyball team defeated the Winthrop Eagles three sets to none in a Big South conference match-up at the Templeton Center.  The Blue Hose downed Winthrop 25-20, 25-17, 26-24.

Junior Kelsey McKee (Greenville, S.C./Eastside) led PC in the sweep with 13 kills, while sophomore Amanda Kettles (Canton, Ga./Cherokee) chipped in 10.  Offensively the Blue Hose had a .243 hitting percentage and out-dug Winthrop 45 digs to 41, with Rachel Lewis (Bloomington, Ill./Tri-Valley) recording 13 digs and Lisa Shelley (Columbia, S.C./Blythewood) with 10.

In the first set McKee put down a kill to give the Blue Hose the first point and a lead they would hold until the score tied at 13-13.  A Winthrop attack error put PC back on top and with an advantage they would never relinquish on the way to a 25-20 win.  PC held Winthrop to a .000 hitting percentage and recorded two blocks.

The Blue Hose opened the second set strong and took a 19-9 lead on a kill by Lindsey Harris (Taylors, S.C./Eastside).  The Eagles went on a 2-6 run to bring the score to 21-15, but with help from kills by McKee and Shelley the Blue Hose lead 24-16.  A kill by Haley Thurmond (Mackinaw, Ill./Deercreek-Mackinaw) gave PC the 25-17 victory in set two.

After the break both teams battled back and forth before Winthrop took a 15-19 lead.  A kill by Kettles and back-to-back attach errors by the Eagles brought PC to within one point at 18-19.  The Blue Hose took the lead at 21-20 off of a service ace by Kettles, but Winthrop answered with a kill by Shannon Sitzmann.  The score would again tie at 23-23 and at 24-24 before PC grabbed the lead again on a service ace, this time by Elizabeth Heineman (Normal, Ill./Normal West).  A kill by Lindsey Harris would give the Blue Hose the 26-24 set and match win.

PC moves to 4-7 in conference action and 7-17 overall with the win.  Winthrop falls to 5-5 in the Big South and 9-14 overall.  The Eagles were led by Sitzmann's 11 kills and Janice Rivera's 13 digs.

The Blue Hose are back in action tomorrow when they travel to UNC Charlotte for a 3 p.m. non-conference match.
