CLINTON, S.C. ? Presbyterian College's women's basketball team will hold its “Think Pink” game in its meeting this Saturday, Feb. 16 against Converse College at 2 p.m.
The Blue Hose will wear pink shoelaces for the game, as well as warm-up in black t-shirts with special pink lettering prior to the contest. In addition, PC's greek organizations will be representing pink at the game as well.
PC's women's basketball team wore its pink shoelaces also in its last game against USC Aiken.
The game with Converse is the first game of a men's and women's basketball doubleheader at PC. The men's basketball team will take on Carver Bible College immediately following the women's game against Converse.
It will be Senior Day for both the men's and women's basketball teams. The women's team will honors its three seniors, while the men's basketball team will honor its two seniors.
The Big South Conference and corporate partner Crocs, Inc., teamed together to enhance the upcoming national “Think Pink” initiative in which the footwear company will outfit all Big South women's basketball coaching staffs with pink Crocs? shoes for their respective “Think Pink” basketball games from Feb. 2-16. The Conference-wide effort with Crocs will allow the Conference, its coaches and member institutions, to join in the WBCA's “Think Pink” initiative to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond, as well as raise funds for breast cancer research.
Crocs, which became a Big South corporate partner in October, will provide a pair of pink Crocs? shoes to every Big South women's basketball head coach, assistant coach and bench personnel, as well as various school administrators, to be worn during each school's designated “Think Pink” home game. Fans are encouraged to wear their own pink Crocs? shoes to these games as well in support of the WBCA's “Think Pink” initiative, which began in 2007.
“It is a privilege for the Big South Conference, its member institutions and partners to participate in the WBCA's ?Think Pink' Week,” stated Big South Commissioner Kyle Kallander. “We are extremely pleased that our great friends at Crocs have partnered with us for this outstanding cause with their generous donation. I encourage all Big South fans to help us in the fight against this dreaded disease by donating generously to breast cancer research.”
The Conference will have special “Think Pink” signage at each arena recognizing Crocs' contribution, as well as web banner on its website, www.BigSouthSports.com, promoting the League's “Think Pink” games. In addition to the Conference and Crocs' involvement, Big South member institutions are coordinating local awareness efforts as part of the “Think Pink” initiative, from unique fundraising and recognizing cancer survivors, to pink-related giveaways, among others.
Below is a list of the Big South's “Think Pink” women's basketball games, as well as a school-by-school listing of local awareness initiatives.
Charleston Southern (Tuesday, Feb. 12 vs. Winthrop, 7:00pm)
Charleston Southern is inviting breast cancer survivors to the game on Feb. 12 and will honor them at halftime. The CSU coaching staff plans to dress in pink, and all fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game. Charleston Southern also will distribute pink ribbons to all fans upon entry, as will provide breast cancer facts and statistics throughout the game.
Coastal Carolina (Saturday, Feb. 2 vs. Savannah State, 4:00pm)
Coastal Carolina is provide shirts for its student body attending the game (pink for females and black for males) that read “Coastal Cares.” A ribbon will appear on the sleeve of the pink shirts.
High Point (Saturday, Feb. 9 vs. Coastal Carolina, 5:00pm and Tuesday, Feb. 12 vs. Radford at 7:00pm)
High Point will provide free admission to both games to those who make a monetary donation. The first 150 students receive a free “Think Pink” shirt. The spirit squads will wear pink hair ribbons and HPU give out pink ribbon pins for fans to wear. In addition, the High Point band and staff will wear pink shirts, while the women's basketball team will wear pink shirts during warm-ups. HPU will also sell pink shirts to fans with all proceeds going toward breast cancer research.
Liberty (Saturday, Feb. 9 vs. UNC Asheville, 4:00pm; TV: Flames Television Network)
Liberty is offering $5 tickets to fans that wear pink to the game, and the Lady Flames basketball team will warm-up in pink t-shirts and wear pink shoelaces. At halftime, Liberty will recognize breast cancer survivors in attendance. In addition, local breast cancer survivor groups will have an opportunity to set up “awareness booths” on the concourse of the Vines Center, and Liberty will provide breast cancer facts and statistics throughout the game.
Presbyterian (Saturday, Feb. 16 vs. Converse, 2:00pm)
Future Big South Conference member Presbyterian will have its women's basketball team wear pink shoelaces for the game, as well as warm-up in pink t-shirts prior to the contest. In addition, Presbyterian's greek organizations will be representing pink at the game as well. PC's women's basketball team will also wear its pink warm-up shirts for its Feb. 13 game at USC-Aiken.
Radford (Saturday, Feb. 16 vs. Charleston Southern, 3:00pm)
Everyone in attendance will receive a pink ribbon in recognition of and in support of this initiative, and any cancer survivor (any form of cancer) and their family will receive free admission to the game. Radford and Charleston Southern will wear “Think Pink” t-shirts during pre-game warm-ups. Radford's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will be taking donations to support cancer research, while RU is working with its campus sororities to help raise funds for breast cancer.
UNC Asheville (Wednesday, Feb. 6 vs. Winthrop, 7:00pm)
UNC Asheville plans to recognize cancer survivors, raise money for the Kay Yow Foundation with donations at the door, and auction off Coach Betsy Blose's pair of Crocs to raise money.
Winthrop (Saturday, Feb. 16 vs. High Point, 1:00pm; TV: SportSouth)
Winthrop is partnering with a sorority to collect spare change from all fans arriving for the Feb. 16 day-night basketball doubleheader at Winthrop Coliseum. Winthrop's game-operations staff will wear pink as well.
