Winthrop Fights Off PC Challenge

PC-Winthrop Box Score

CLINTON, S.C. ? Presbyterian College and Winthrop stayed scoreless for 83 minutes, but Winthrop was able to break away with two late goals in its 2-0 victory over PC in Big South Conference action at Martin Stadium.

The loss drops the Blue Hose to 2-7-1 (0-2 Big South) on the year, while the victory improves the Eagles to 7-3-0 (2-0 Big South) on the season.

The two teams played even for most of the match with PC controlling a great deal of the action in the second half. The Blue Hose only had one shot in the first half, but PC took seven shots in the second stanza.

The Blue Hose almost took the lead in the second half, but a Stevenson Gravlee (Columbus, Ga./Brookstone) shot went high with just under 14 minutes left to play.

Ben Kieffner was able to pick up Winthrop's first goal in the match when he hit a rifle from just outside the 18-yard box. Kieffner's shot was saved by PC goalkeeper Andrew Brandt (Lawrenceville, Ga./Hebron Christian Academy). Matthew Skonicki opportunistically scored on the rebound to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead at the 83:09 mark.

Just over three minutes later, preseason Big South Player of the Year Daniel Revivo created a shot for himself in the 87th-minute, placing the ball low and into the left corner of the net to give Winthrop a 2-0 win over the Blue Hose.

The Eagles finished the game with 21 total shots to PC's eight. Winthrop took five corner kicks, while the Blue Hose concluded the match with two corner kicks. Both of PC's corner kicks came in the second half.

Andrew Chavarria (Lexington, S.C./Lexington) led the Blue Hose with three shots.

Brandt made six saves in the contest to mark the second time in 2008 that the sophomore goalkeeper had made five or more saves in a match. He had seven saves in PC's 1-1 tie with South Carolina earlier this season.

Winthrop goalkeeper Patrick Mitrovich acquired two saves in his shutout victory between the pipes.

The Blue Hose will next travel to Radford, Va. to take on conference foe Radford at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 3. PC will return home at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 7 for a league match against UNC Asheville at Martin Stadium.
