Blue Hose Comeback Falls Short Against Radford

CLINTON, S.C. ? The Presbyterian College men's basketball team put together a 19-3 run over a four-minute span late in the second half, but the squad was unable to overcome an 18-point halftime deficit Saturday evening against Radford as the Blue Hose fell 65-55 in front of 418 fans at the Templeton Center.

The Blue Hose fell to 5-9 on the year and 2-1 in Big South play while the Highlanders improve to 5-9 on the season and 2-1 in conference competition.

The loss snaps a 14-game home win streak that PC held coming into the contest. The Blue Hose last lost at the
Templeton Center on Jan. 10, 2007, when they fell 74-57 to former South Atlantic Conference foe Lincoln Memorial.

Leading the way for PC was guard Pierre Miller, who dropped in a game-high 15 points on six-of-10 shooting from the floor. Josh Johnson added 13 points to go along with a game-high four steals while Chase Holmes reached double figures with 12 points. Travis Sligh had just two points but pulled down a team-best seven rebounds.

After making just seven-of-21 attempts in the first half the Blue Hose found themselves to be down 18 at the intermission. However, head coach Gregg Nibert's team responded to his halftime talk as the Garnet and Blue went on a 9-2 run to open the second stanza, pulling within 13 at 40-27. Miller notched four points during the run, all of which came in the lane.

Radford was able to battle back, extending its lead to 25, 55-30, at the midway point of the period, before the home team put together a solid run over a span of just under four minutes.

Johnson's three-pointer at the
8:21 mark broke a 4:33 scoreless drought for Nibert's squad. Miller followed it up with a steal and an easy bucket. Holmes then hit a lay-up, slicing the deficit to 18 as the Blue Hose went on a 7-0 run in a mere 59 seconds.

Trailing 58-37 with
6:35 to play, PC never gave up. Miller dialed up a three-pointer from 24-feet out after escaping pressure from two RU defenders near mid-court. A turnover by Amir Johnson opened the door for the Blue Hose, and the team responded. Johnson got free for a three of his own from the corner. Forty seconds later Johnson hit a free throw, putting the score 58-44 in favor of the visitors.

A foul by Phillip Martin put Holmes at the line with
4:28 to go. Hit calmly hit both free throws to pull within 12. In just 2:07, the Blue Hose had put together another outstanding run, allowing the team to get back into the contest. The 9-0 spurt, however, was answered by a jumper by Joey Lynch-FLohr at the 3:39 mark.

PC was unable to get the margin back to single digits over the final few minutes of play, ending the program's home winning streak.

For the game, the Highlanders controlled the lane, outscoring the home team 40-30 in the paint. The 12 offensive rebounds by Radford amounted to 14 second-chance points while the Blue Hose managed five offensive boards, resulting in just six second-chance points.

The Highlanders had a trio of student-athletes in double figures. Lynch-Flohr posted 15 points while Artsiom Parakhouski had a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds.

RU connected on 26-of-49 attempts from the floor for a 53.1 percent clip while the Blue Hose drained 20-of-46 shots for 43.5 percent. The Highlanders grabbed 37 rebounds to PC's 21.

The Blue Hose return to action Monday evening at
7 p.m., when they take on Liberty in the Templeton Center.
