Blue Hose Lose Battle with Bucs

CHARLESTON, S.C. ? Presbyterian College women's basketball battled back and forth with Charleston Southern on Saturday evening at CSU Field House. The lead changed 10 times before the Bucs were able to pull away in the second half en route to a 61-48 victory.

Junior forward Lea Smith (Marion, N.C./McDowell) earned her first double-double of the season, finishing with a team-high 17 points and 10 rebounds. Helping Smith out on defense was sophomore Chelsea Wright (Atlanta, Ga./Whitefield Academy) who grabbed seven off the glass and made one block.

Sophomore point guard Katlin Moore (Fort Mill, S.C./Charlotte Catholic (N.C.)) jumpstarted the Blue Hose offense, scoring nine points in the first half including going 6-for-6 from the line. After the Lady Bucs (8-12, 2-5 Big South) shot out to a 6-1 lead, sophomore Kristen Stevens (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central) made both free throws and Smith scored a quick four points to give PC its first lead of the game, 7-6, with 14:16 left in the first half.

The lead switched back and forth between the Bucs and the Blue Hose for most of the first half. Down by two with 3:30 remaining, Moore sank two from the line to tie the game for the sixth time, at 23. Smith went 1-for-2 at the stripe to give PC a one-point advantage.

Less than a minute later, Charleston Southern's Allie Schwagmeyer made a layup off a pass by Crystal Robinson to change the lead for the final time. The Lady Bucs scored seven points in the final 2:27 to end the first half with a six-point edge (30-24).

Although PC (2-16, 0-7 Big South) shot 42 percent from the floor in the second half, they were unable to stop CSU's momentum.  Smith was the first to score for either team three and a half minutes into the second half, but Bucs' Kiki Rutledge made a steal and a layup that started a 14-3 run over the next six minutes. Stevens drilled a three with 10:46 remaining but Charleston Southern followed it up with two treys by Robinson and Decarvalho.

Sophomore Amanda Mills (Oregon City, Ore./San Diego Mesa CC) stretched a layup into a three-point play with a shot from the line to bring the Blue Hose within 15, 50-35, with 8:40 to go.

Down by 22 points with two minutes left to play, PC went on a nine-point run to narrow the deficit to 13. Moore started the streak with a layup and ended it with two baskets from the stripe with 19 seconds remaining.

Three members of the Blue Hose ended the day in double figures. In addition to Smith's 17 points, Moore added 14 and Mills chipped in 10, combining for 41 of the team's 48 points.

Reigning Big South Freshman of the Week Allie Schwagmeyer led the Lady Bucs with 18 points.
