Blue Hose Unable To Take Down Eagles

ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Presbyterian College volleyball team was unable to complete the sweep of Winthrop Wednesday evening, falling in Rock Hill by a 3-0 score. Set scores were 25-19, 25-22, 25-21.

The Blue Hose now stand at 12-18 overall and 5-10 in Big South play. The Eagles are now 12-15 overall and 9-6 in league action.

Sophomore Presley Mabrey led the way with a team-high 13 kills. Lisa Shelley added eight while Amanda Kettles, who only had seven smashes, hit a match-high .467.

Kilee Ruppe dished out 33 assists while Ashley Dunlap had a match-high 16 digs. Mabrey had three total blocks while Andrea Barman tallied two stuffs.

Barman got things going for PC with a kill on the first play of the match, giving the squad a 1-0 lead. After WU reeled off eight of the next 10 points, head coach Chris Belshe's team got back on track after an Eagles' miscue. Mabrey slammed a powerful ball down to the floor and another WU error made it 8-6. The teams would trade points, with PC's coming off another Mabrey mash, but Winthrop widened its lead to seven, 18-11.

A kill by Kettles and two errors by WU put the score at 19-14, but it was as close as the visitors would get in the first set.

The teams battled back-and-forth in the second stanza. Tied at five, Mabrey's kill and an Eagles' mistake made it 7-5 in favor of PC. A few plays later, an attack error by WU made the score 12-9 and forced a time-out by the home squad. The Eagles scored four of the next five, tying the contest at 13.

Two errors and back-to-back kills by Kettles pushed the margin to four, 17-13. Barman's kill made the score 19-16. However, the Eagles would tie the contest at 20 off kills from Becca Toor and Kaley Viola. Lisa Shelley's slam kept the set alive at 24-22, but the home squad was able to go into the intermission ahead 2-0 after Toor's kill ended the set.

The Blue Hose came out of the break and after an error put the team down 1-0, Allison Brown slammed home a kill to tie the score. Shelley then took a pass from Brown for a 2-1 lead. The squads continued to trade points. A kill from Kettles and an attack error by WU pushed PC's lead to two, 7-5. The Blue Hose held a slim lead until WU tied the score at 11.

Fans saw each team trade points. Mabrey's kill tied the contest at 14. The Eagles recorded two straight points and maintained at least a one-point edge the rest of the way. Down 24-20, Mabrey kept the match alive, but it was not enough in the 25-21 loss.

The Blue Hose return to action Saturday evening at 6 p.m. at Charleston Southern. It marks the last match of the 2010 campaign.
