Blue Hose Sink Bucs' Ship On Senior Night; PC Wins 3-1

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Behind a solid all-around performance by the Presbyterian College volleyball team, the Blue Hose defeated Charleston Southern on its Senior Night, 3-1. Set scores were 25-22, 24-26, 25-20, 25-23.

The Blue Hose finish the 2010 season at 13-18 and 6-10 in Big South play. CSU stands at 12-19 on the year and 6-10 in league action.

Presley Mabrey accounted for 19 kills while Lisa Shelley added 18. Amanda Kettles netted 12 kills in the win while Kilee Ruppe dished out 49 assists. Shelley had a double-double as she posted a team-high 16 digs. Ashley Dunlap had 14 digs while Mabrey also earned a double-double with her 10 digs.

Kettles had four total blocks while Allison Brown had three. Andrea Barman had two as did Mabrey.

In the first set, PC found itself trailing 5-1, with its only point coming from a kill by the rookie Andrea Barman. Lisa Shelley's powerful punch landed another point on the board for the visitors. After the teams traded scores the next four possessions, the Blue Hose erupted for six consecutive points. During the run, Shelley and Amanda Kettles each had a kill while Mabrey had two smashes. Two Lady Bucs errors accounted for the other two points.

PC maintained a one-point advantage, 11-10, when Mabrey and Shelley posted back-to-back kills. At 13-11, an error by CSU and Kettles plastered the floor for a four-point edge.

The Bucs tied the contest at 18, but a 5-0 spurt by PC ended the home squad's chance for a win in the first set. The run was started by four attack errors by CSU. That, combined with a Mabrey mash put the score at 23-18. The teams essentially traded points the rest of the way. Then, Barman slammed home the set-winning point for the 25-22 win.

In the first set, Mabrey erupted for seven kills while PC hit .250 as a team. Ruppe garnered 11 of the team's 15 assists while Ruppe, Elizabeth Heineman and Mabrey all had four digs in the set win.

The Blue Hose dropped a tough second set, 26-24. Leading the way in the stanza was Shelley, who amassed six kills.

It was a hard-fought set as the teams were tied at 10. CSU went on a 3-0 run and maintained the lead at 17-14. However, the mighty Blue Hose went on a 3-0 run to tie the set at 17. The squads went back-and-forth. The Bucs went ahead 23-21 only to have Barman tally a kill. Dunlap dropped back to serve and spliced the defense for another one of her patented aces, knotting the score at 23. The set went into extra points, but CSU was able to pull out the 26-24 win.

PC took a 2-1 lead after a 25-20 third-set win. The Blue Hose stormed out to a 9-4 lead thanks in part to multiple miscues by CSU in addition to kills from Mabrey, Allison Brown and Kettles. The Bucs fired back, taking a 15-13 lead, but Brown's kill and Kettle's block evened the score.

After the teams traded points, PC embarked on a 4-0 run. Shelley had both of the team's kills in the run. The second kill by Shelley came after a fast and furious rally that saw each team have four possessions. During the second possession by PC in the point, Heineman's dig saved the point. However, it sailed toward the stands. Ruppe chased after it and put it back into play with a one-armed hit as she was falling into press row. A solid defensive play helped Shelley get into position for the smash.

The Bucs pulled within two at 20-18, but Ruppe decided it was time to continue setting Mabrey until she could be stopped. Thus, Mabrey pounded home three straight balls for a 23-18 advantage. Kettles and Mabrey each posted additional kills after that, with Mabrey's accounting for the set winner at 25-20.

With the score at 11-10 in favor of PC, Brown slammed home a kill. Dunlap then had an ace. That, coupled with two more PC points made the score 15-10.

CSU tied the set at 21 and took a 23-21 lead. However, a time-out by head coach Chris Belshe settled the team. After the time-out, Shelley slammed home the kill. Then, Kettles evened the score with a kill of her own.

After a CSU time-out, Kettles and Brown teamed up to stuff a CSU player, giving the team match point. Brown then ended the contest with a cross-court slam for the 25-23 win.

The match concludes the 2010 season for PC. It also ends the stellar careers for Ashley Dunlap, Carolyn Fabros, Lindsey Harris, Elizabeth Heineman, Amanda Kettles, Kilee Ruppe, and Lisa Shelley.
