CLINTON, S.C.
- With Presbyterian College down by a point, Amanda Mills (Oregon City,
Ore.) nailed a clutch three-pointer with 5.4 seconds remaining in the game to
give the Blue Hose a thrilling 53-51 win over Campbell at the Templeton
Center. The basket was the senior's
third from downtown on the night as she finished with 10 points to share the
team scoring lead.
"I was really proud of our defensive effort tonight," said head coach
Ronny Fisher. "We were able to hold a Campbell
to 14-points under their average and that was one of the keys to our
victory. We struggled offensively but we
made some big baskets down the stretch. Amanda
had a good look at the end and did what we expect seniors to do for us."
The Blue Hose improve to 3-8 on the year while Campbell drops to
1-10. Next year, Campbell will join the
Big South Conference and become a regular opponent of the Blue Hose.
The Blue Hose led by their largest margin of the night, eight, at the
4:42 mark with Sherece Smith's (Clemson, S.C.) free throw to give PC a 46-39
lead. Campbell, however rattled off a
7-0 run to cut the advantage to just one point two minutes later.
Campbell took a one-point lead with 59 seconds left but the Blue Hose
regained the lead twenty seconds later as Mariah Pietrowski (Elizabethton,
Tenn.) converted a layup with 36 seconds left in the game. The Fighting Camels went back on top by one
with a coast-to-coast layup from Amanda O'Neill with 20 seconds left.
PC matriculated the ball down the floor with Dria David (Lawrenceville,
Ga.) taking a layup which was blocked out of bounds. The Blue Hose took a timeout to set up the
game-winning play. The inbound pass went
to Pietrowski who was unable to find space underneath. The post player dished out to Mills who
rained in the three-pointer from way beyond the arc.
A timeout by Campbell allowed the Camels to set up an answer. The inbound pass was pressured and Campbell
was only able to take a desperation shot which just found backboard at the
buzzer.
Freshman Karlee Taylor (Asheville, N.C.) also finished with 10 points
while Campbell's Tonisha Baker led all scorers with 17 points.
Campbell out-shot PC .386 (22-of-57) to .340 (16-of-47) from the field and
led the Blue Hose by two points at the halftime break. The Blue Hose were .625 (15-for-24) from the charity
stripe while the Camels were 3-of-7 (.429) at the line.
David scored four points on the night but tied a career-high with seven
steals on the night. She also led the
team in rebounds with five boards. PC
was out-rebounded on the night by a 41-38 margin.
Pietrowski scored eight points with a career-high four assists. She also made two steals and one block.
The Blue Hose
will open Big South Conference play on Monday, January 3 at home against
Coastal Carolina. PC fell by two points
last year in the season finale at Coastal.
Tip-off for the first game of 2011 is slated for 7 p.m.
