CLINTON,
S.C. - Presbyterian College put four student-athletes in
double-figures on the night but ultimately fell, 77-76, to Gardner-Webb in
overtime in the home finale for the Blue Hose. The Bulldogs netted the game
winning shot with under a second left in overtime on a strongly contested
34-foot three-pointer by Grayson Flittner.
Jake Troyli
started the night off on the right foot with 10 points in the first half to
help lift PC (5-24, 2-14 BSC) to a 34-31 halftime lead. In the opening frame,
PC was outshot by a 50.0-to-48.3 percent margin. The redshirt-freshman added
eight second half points and shared the lead for PC in scoring with 18 points.
The Blue Hose
defense stepped up in the early moments of the second half, holding the
Bulldogs (7-21, 5-12 BSC) to five points before the first media timeout and
extending the lead out to 46-36 at the 15:56 mark. The resurgent defense
opened the door for the Blue Hose offense to shoot 77.8 percent from the field
in the second half's first eight minutes.
The Bulldogs
cut into the Blue Hose lead with a 7-2 run through the middle of the period and
took their first lead of the second half at the 4:07 mark with a three-pointer
from Anton Silver.
With 1:18, PC
re-took a two-point lead when Khalid Mutakabbir's fast break layup drew a
foul. The freshman summarily made the charity basket. On the other end,
Gardner-Webb drained two free throws to knot the game at 68.
PC turned the
ball back over on the other end with 35 second to give Gardner-Webb a chance to
hold for the last shot. The Bulldogs missed a layup and then called timeout to
set a play. The ensuing inbounds pass was mishandled and the Blue Hose were
given the ball out of bounds with 13.2 remaining.
Mutakabbir
dribbled inside the arc and took a jumper from 13 feet with five seconds left
which rimmed out and fell to Gardner-Webb whose effort at the buzzer missed
well wide of the backboard to send the game to overtime, tied at 69. It marked
the second consecutive men's game at the Templeton Center that went to
extra time.
Neither team
was able to get an advantage larger than two points in the extra session. With
just under a minute, Chase Holmes grabbed a steal and took it down the floor
for an emphatic dunk. Holmes would finish the game with 18 points to share the
team lead in scoring with Troyli.
Gardner-Webb
tied the score again at the other end when Anton went 1-for-2 at the free throw
line. Mutakabbir then drove the lane for what looked to be the decisive basket
for PC.
However, it
was Grayson Flittner who drained a 34-footer in traffic with two ticks left on
the clock to win it for Gardner-Webb. PC was unable to produce an answer as
the home run pass went out of bounds.
Troyli ended
up only one rebound shy of the double-double with nine. He also mashed four
blocks and grabbed two steals.
The Blue Hose
will now take their act on the road to close out the 2009-10 season with away
contests against Radford and High Point. Thursday's game at Radford
starts at 7 p.m. while Saturday's season finale begins at 7 p.m.
