ASHEVILLE, N.C. - In a match that was postponed
from earlier in the year, the Presbyterian College men's tennis team lost a 7-0
decision at UNC Asheville Saturday afternoon in its regular-season finale.
The Blue Hose now stand at 7-18 on the year and 0-6 in Big South play.
Despite the 7-0 score, the match was closer than the score indicated as four of
the contests went into the tiebreaking set.
PC fell behind 1-0 after dropping all three doubles contests. Top-seeded Matt
Martin and Andrew Brigham came the closest to winning, losing 8-6 to Jonas
Brobeck and Matt Waissen. Zachary Sprouse and Edward Snead lost 8-2 at the No.
2 spot as did Ivan Ho and Jame Zaher.
In ingles action, Martin dropped a three-set thriller at No. 1 to Nicolai
Nonnenbroich 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. Brigham also lost in three sets to Waisen. After
winning the first set 6-3, he dropped the next two 6-4, 6-2.
At the No. 3 position, Sprouse won the first set over Adrien Langard 7-5. He
was unable to recreate the magic in the next two sets, losing 6-2, 6-2.
Fourth-seeded Ho also took the first set 7-5 before losing the next two by
identical 6-2, 6-2 scores to Brobeck.
Zaher lost at No. 5 6-3, 6-2 to Ryan Matthews while Snead dropped a 6-3, 6-3
decision to Thomas Rees at the No. 6 position.
The Blue Hose will look to rebound next week at the Big South Conference
Championships, marking the first postseason competition for any PC athletic
team since moving to Division I (cross country and golf have both participated
at the conference level, but neither was eligible to win). The men' tennis
squad is one of two PC sports that has been fast tracked, with the other being
softball.
