CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Presbyterian College women's basketball team fell to the Charleston Southern Buccaneers on Saturday afternoon by a score of 52-47. Second-half turnovers and a 17-2 run by the Bucs to end the game stole the victory from the visiting Blue Hose.
PC took a seven-point lead into the locker room at half. They were able to stretch their lead to as many as 10 points during the second half, but failed to score a field goal after the 9:49 mark.
The Bucs were able to mount a 10-2 run going into the final media time out to set the score at 47-45 in favor of the Blue Hose with 3:37 remaining. Charleston Southern then reclaimed the lead at 2:39 when Helen Terry hit an open three to give the Bucs a 48-47 lead. The home team never looked back as they grabbed the five-point victory.
Kelsey Wasmer scored a game high 19 points followed closely by Katie Tull with 14. PC's Kristen Stevens (Pickerington, Ohio) scored 12 points and Mariah Pietrowski (Elizabethton, Tenn.) 11 points in the losing effort. Pietrowski added three blocks and eight rebounds to lead the team. Dria David (Lawrenceville, Ga.) scored eights points to go with her six rebounds and four assists.
The Blue Hose shot 17-41 (41.5%) from the field including 6-15 (40%) from the three-point line. The Bucs only shot 28.3% (FG) and 19.2 % (3 pt.).
PC opened the game with the first three points coming from an "and-one" by Pietrowski before an exciting back-and-forth began between the teams. The game had eleven lead changes and two ties in the first half. Neither team lead by more than four points until the final 90 seconds of the first half when PC was able to push the lead to seven at the break (30-23). Stevens hit three important threes to lead the Blue Hose with nine points in the first half. Pietrowski contributed seven points.
The Blue Hose fall to 4-11 (1-3) while the Bucs improve to 8-9 (2-2).
PC will next play at Winthrop on Monday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
