Five Presbyterian College players registered double-digit kills, including Presley Mabrey who had 20, as the Blue Hose fell to High Point, 3-2, in volleyball action tonight in High Point, N.C. In a hotly contested match that saw two sets go into extra points, the Panthers took the win with scores of 28-26, 23-25, 24-26, 25-14 and 15-13.
Presbyterian College drops to 7-13 overall and 3-3 in the Big South, while High Point improves to 6-14 and 4-2 in the league.
Following Mabrey's 20 kills, were Rachel Hall, Allison Brown and Caroline Cann with 12 kills apiece. PC hit .158 for the match, posting a high of .325 in the second set. The Blue Hose had 63 kills, but 34 attack errors and 17 service errors. Mary Trimpe recorded a season-high 25 digs in the contest as well.
High Point was led by Kristin Heldt with 13 kills, with Molly Barlow pacing the teams in digs with 20. The Panthers were .166 in hitting with 54 kills and 27 errors.
High Point led 22-16 in the first set before back-to-back PC kills and two attack HPU attack errors cut the margin to just two, 22-20. The Blue Hose tied the match at 23-23 and after a Brown kill set up set point, a PC service error tied the set again at 24-24. Two more ties later and the score was 26-26. Heldt posted a kill, and PC had an attack error to give the Panthers the tight first set win.
Down 16-20 in what had been another tight set, PC rattled off four straight, highlighted by two kills by Berryman, to knot the second set up at 20-20. The set stayed back and forth after an attack error by PC, the score was tied at 23-23. Hall and Mabrey sealed the deal and the 25-23 set win with back-to-back kills, however.
The third set saw 14 ties, the last coming at 24-24 with Mabrey giving the Blue Hose the 2-1 lead with two straight kills. Mabrey dominated play with eight kills in the 26-24 win.
The fourth set was all High Point as the Panthers built a 6-1 lead and kept the margin at least by five throughout, capitalizing on 10 PC attack errors and three service errors to take the 25-14 win.
High Point opened up the fifth set with an 8-4 lead before the Blue Hose fought back with a 4-2 run to cut it to an 8-10 deficit. The Panthers rattled off two straight to go back up by four, 12-8. High Point led 14-11 until a kill by Berryman and an attack error by the Panthers made it a one-point game, 14-13, in favor of the Panthers. Courtney Johnk squashed the comeback with a kill to give High Point the 15-13 set and match win.
The Blue Hose are next in action at Campbell Saturday, Oct. 15, at 2 p.m.
