Campbell Rallies in Fifth Set to Take 3-2 Win over PC

Campbell rallied from a 14-9 deficit in the fifth set to edge the Presbyterian College volleyball team 19-17, taking the match 3-2, in Big South action Saturday afternoon in Buies Creek, N.C.  The Camels won by scores of 25-22, 25-20, 14-14, 24-26, 19-17.

The Camels improve to 10-13 overall and 3-4 in Big South matches, while PC falls to 7-14 on the year and 3-4 in conference play.

Ally Russo paced the Camels on the afternoon with 11 kills and 15 digs, her first double-double of the year.  Brooke Kelley added nine kills, four digs and three blocks, while Kelsey Marek added nine more scores and six blocks.

Heather Wilson tacked on 33 assists with seven digs and a career-high six aces.  Annie Kobeski tallied six kills and five blocks, with Jessica Groen piling on four kills and three blocks. Kelsey Campbell registered a team-high 22 digs with two aces.

Leading PC was Presley Mabrey with a match-high 21 kills to go along with 15 digs and four blocks. Allison Brown and Caroline Cann joined Mabrey in double figures with 17 and 15 kills, respectively. Cann tacked on 14 digs and five blocks in the loss.

Kelly Berryman added nine kills and seven blocks, with Ashtin Frank tacking on 57 assists and 12 digs. Mary Trimpe grabbed 23 digs in the loss.

Despite a combined 15 kills from Brown and Berryman through the first two sets, PC fell behind 2-0 to open the match as the Camels posted eight team blocks and seven aces. The Camels closed out the first set 25-22 before topping the Blue Hose 25-20 in set two.

Presbyterian College bounced back in the third, hitting .448 (17-4-29) behind six more scores from Mabrey and another five from Cann to down the Camels 25-14. Marek paced CU in the frame with three kills.

Kelley hit four kills in the fourth, but Mabrey, Brown and Cann put up all 14 of PC's kills in the set to win the stanza 26-24 and even the match at 2-all. The set featured 12 total tie scores and six lead changes.

In the fifth set, Presbyterian College quickly built a 14-9 lead to force match point on another Mabrey score. Marek, however, sparked the Camels with a kill to start a 6-0 run for Campbell before a CU service error ended the spurt.

Tied at 15-apiece, Mabrey gave PC match point for the sixth time, but Russo's kill knotted the frame at 16-all. Mabrey again put the Blue Hose in position for match point with a kill to go up 17-16, however, a PC error evened the set for the eighth time. Two straight PC attack errors finally ended the marathon contest, giving the Camels a 19-17 win.

PC returns home Tuesday, Oct. 18 for a 6 p.m. match against East Tennessee State.
