CLINTON, S.C. - The Presbyterian College women's basketball team fell at
home to Charleston Southern on Monday night by a score of 63-52. Senior Amanda Mills (Oregon City, Ore.) scored a season-high 15 points, but it was not enough as the Bucs proved too much
for the Blue Hose on "Senior Night."
Charleston Southern had a 3-0 lead before PC replied with an 8-2 run capped by a Sherece Smith (Clemson, S.C.) jumper with 14:19 to go in the first half. With
the score at 8-5 in favor of the Blue Hose, a physical back-and-forth developed. The lead would change hands four times, with PC owning the largest lead of the half,
four points, after Mills connected on her first three of the night at the 11:05 mark. The Bucs replied with poise and held a 20-18 lead at the break.
Both teams only connected on seven shots in the first half. CSU held the two-point lead
thanks to being six of nine from the charity stripe compared to PC's three of six. The Bucs were also 0-11 from behind the arc, while PC was one of four.
Charleston Southern had a 9-0 run to start the second half and extended their lead to 11
points at the 17:28 mark. Mills responded with her second three pointer of the night, while Mariah Pietrowski (Elizabethton, Tenn.) connected on a free throw to bring the Blue Hose back to within seven
points.
Another physical back-and-forth developed from that point on, with only three layups and
one jumper taking place through the final twelve minutes of the game. There were however 27 successful free throws and six three pointers. PC went 15 of 18 on the
line during that stretch and CSU was 12 of 14. The closest PC would get would be six points after a pair of Pietrowski free throws at the 9:10 mark.
Charleston Southern had four players in double figures on the night. Kelsey Wasmer
recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Lakeitha Alston led all scorers with 18 points.
Mills led the Blue Hose with a season-high 15 points. The senior was three of six from
behind the arc and hit all six of her attempted free throws. Pietrowski went two of four from the floor but connected on seven of 10 free throws for 11 total points.
Smith led the team with nine rebounds. Dria David (Lawrenceville, Ga.) had
five points, eight rebounds, and three steals.
For the game, PC shot 19 of 27 (70 percent) from the charity stripe and CSU shot 18 of 25
(72 percent). The Bucs were five of nine from three in the second half to finish the game five of 20 (25 percent). The Blue Hose were five of 10 (50 percent) on the
night from three.
PC falls to 8-18 (4-9 Big South) while CSU improves to 12-13 (6-6 Big South). The Blue
Hose will play at home again on Saturday evening when they host Gardner-Webb. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
