PC Falls to UNC Asheville On The Road, 88-55

Asheville, N.C. - The Presbyterian College men's basketball team stuck with UNC Asheville in the second half and outscored them 35-33 in the final 20 minutes, but the Bulldogs big first half lead proved too much for the Blue Hose as they fell 88-55.

PC falls to 10-14 on the year and 4-8 in the Big South. The Blue Hose were led by Jake Troyli's (Largo, Fla.) 11 points, while Ryan Hargrave (Taylorsville, N.C.) came off the bench to chip in ten points in his 16 minutes of play. Also coming off the bench, freshman Joshua Clyburn (Charlotte, N.C.) played 15 minutes and led PC with six rebounds.

Asheville started the game on a quick 7-0 run before Khalid Mutakabbir (Suwanee, Ga.) hit a jumper at 18:09 to make the score 7-2. The Bulldogs kept pushing, however, and extended their lead to 21-4 with 14:36 remaining in the first half.

A three pointer from Josh Johnson (Hendersonville, Tenn.) at 5:10 was followed by two free throws from Troyli, giving him eight total points with six from the free throw line for the half. But, Asheville remained in charge through the remainder of the half, eventually taking a 55-20 lead into the locker room at intermission.

PC was crippled by a 19.2 first half field goal percentage after they hit only five of 26 in the opening period. The Bulldogs shot 67.7 percent from the field and grabbed twice as many rebounds as the Blue Hose, 24 compared to PC's 12.

Walt Allen (London, Ky.) gave PC the first basket of the second half when he hit his first three pointer of the game at 19:03. Jay Reynolds (Marysville, Tenn.) then came on strong and scored five of PC's next six points. A few minutes later, the Blue Hose went on a short 5-0 run after a Mutakabbir trey and a steal from Johnson leading to a layup to make it 67-38 in favor of UNCA with under 13 minutes remaining.

The teams traded baskets for the next few minutes, but a three pointers from Troyli gave PC 21 points in the second half to Asheville's 20. Hargrave then added his first three pointer of the game to make it 75-44 with 7:23 left in the game.

The Blue Hose battled for the rest of the second half, using two free throws from Clyburn and a jumper from Tyler Deihl (Woodstock, Ga.) to keep PC on top of the second half scoring, and a late three pointer by Hargrave at 3:20 gave PC 33 points for the second half to UNC Asheville's 31.

The Bulldogs first half lead proved to be too much for PC to overcome, and the home team ended up with the 88-55 victory. UNC Asheville advances to 12-10 overall and a 7-5 standing in the conference. The Bulldogs had six players in double digits, including J.P Primm and Matt Dickey with 15 each.

The Blue Hose improved to a 46.4 shooting percentage in the second half and shot 33.3 percent from the field for the game, while UNCA hit 61.1 percent of its shots in the game. PC closed the rebounding gap in the second half and pulled down 27 for the game, 15 in the second half. The Bulldogs finished with 36 total rebounds.

PC returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 5 when they travel to Boiling Springs, N.C. to face Gardner-Webb. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
