RADFORD, Va. – The Presbyterian College tennis programs offered a valiant effort against the Radford Highlanders on the road Sunday but fell just short, as the Blue Hose women dropped their match, 4-3, and the men lost a 7-0 contest.
The PC women fall to 8-12 overall and 0-5 in the Big South, while the men's team now owns an 11-10 record and a 0-4 marker in conference.
In the women's match, the Blue Hose got off to a solid start by taking the doubles point from Radford. After a close 8-6 loss in the third flight, Courtney Gardiner (Powder Springs, Ga.) and Patricia Alves (Campinas, Brazil) held off Mirna Matic and Ivana Tomaic in the second flight, 8-6.
Paige Oelke (Athens, Ga.) and Christina Limantoro (Surabaya, Indonesia) then gutted out a tough 8-7 marathon over Petra Dajevic and Mia Drobnjak thanks to a 7-4 tiebreaker in the first flight to give the doubles point to the visitors.
PC kept up the wins by taking a match to begin singles play. Lindsay Krause (Roswell, Ga.) dispatched Emerald Lauzon in the sixth flight, 6-2, 6-3, to pick up her seventh win of the year. After a Radford win, Limantoro squared off against Drobnjak and edged the Highlander in the first set, 7-6, with a 7-3 tiebreaker before powering the victory in the second set, 6-1.
The Blue Hose led the competition after the Limantoro win, 3-1, but Radford edged PC in the final three matches to win the day. Gardiner found herself in a battle against Tomaic, answering a first set loss with a 6-4 second set win before dropping a narrow third set, 7-5.
The men's match saw three competitive doubles matches before a spirited battle in singles action.
Grayson Mills (Lilburn, Ga.) and Rafael Berghaus (Offenbach, Germany) fell short in an 8-5 loss to Stijn Meulemans and Igor Ogrizek in the second flight.
Andrew Brigham (Birmingham, England) and Gonzalo Asis (Madrid, Spain) put up four in their first flight match, as did the pairing ofZachary Sprouse (Hilton Head, S.C.) and Edward Snead IV (Greenwood, S.C.) in the third flight, but neither doubles team could find a win as the men eventually fell, 7-0.
The men's team will host South Carolina State on Wednesday as the Blue Hose participate in Cancer Awareness Day. The women's team next hosts UNC Asheville on Sunday, April 10 at 1 p.m.
