CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College men's soccer team
dropped a non-conference road battle to the Duke Blue Devils on Tuesday night,
2-0.
PC (3-12-0) stood tied with Duke (5-6-1) in a scoreless
deadlock at halftime before the Blue Devils broke through with two goals in the
second half.
Duke used an own goal in the 58th minute and an
Alex Sauciuc 84th minute goal to take the match.
PC goalkeeper Tyler Beadle (Douglasville, Ga.) made eight
saves on the night. Tanner Osborne (Lexington, S.C.) entered the game in the
last 5:23 in relief.
Ignacio Monchetti (Montevideo, Uruguay) led PC with three
shots in the tilt. Byron Quinatoa (Santos Domingo de los Colorados, Ecuador),
Greg White (Stockbridge, Ga.) and Monchetti each tallied one shot on goal as
well.
The Blue Devils broke through in the 58th minute.
Duke slipped past the PC defense without an offside flag and a forward launched
a cross into the box. A PC defender stopped the chance, but the ball appeared
to roll over the goal line and Duke had its first goal, 1-0.
Duke added its second goal on a corner kick late in the
contest. Sauciuc finished the chance from Sebastien Ibeagha and Sean Davis to
seal the result.
The Blue Hose came out strong, matching the home side in
shots on goal for most of the first half on chances from Quinatoa and
Monchetti.
Monchetti gave PC one of its best scoring chances of the
match in the 26th minute as the sophomore launched a hard shot
outside of the goal box that cleared the crossbar by just a few inches.
Beadle made four saves in the first half, including a diving
stop on a sliding shot from Matt Slotnick on a cross into the box.
PC returns to Big South Conference play on Saturday with a
road trip to Campbell. The match is slated for a 3:30 p.m. start.
